Dr Mario fun for North America

This week North American WiiWare gamers can finally get their hands on Dr. Mario Online Rx. It has tormented some of our readers that their cousins across the pond got to play this before them last week. Don’t worry guys, six days of extra practice won’t matter for too long in your online battles. This is well worth a look if you like falling block puzzlers. We gave it the respectable score of 7/10 in our review last week.

If you are a bit of a sports fan you might want to check out Family Table Tennis. This was released as Okiraku Ping-Pong in Japan. 500 points might not seem like much of a risk but you might want to check out our review before downloading. If you already own Wii Sports then there's little point in getting this, in our opinion.

More from Nintendo's press release:

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. This week’s new games are:

Dr. Mario Online Rx (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): The doctor is in! Mario™ takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you’ll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world. Feel like challenging a friend who doesn’t have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you’d like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote™ controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): It’s time for some good old family fun, and what’s more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn’t matter if you’re an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park. Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren’t enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready.

If these two games don’t interest you then you might want to check out the Virtual Console games this week. Metal Slug (Neo Geo) is out today. It comes highly recommended by VC Reviews if you don't already have the Metal Slug Anthology disc. City Connection (NES) is also up for grabs but it is recommended that you should avoid this unless you put on those nostalgic rose tinted glasses.

Nice week for you guys; I know a lot of you wanted Dr. Mario.

I dunno about table tennis, but Dr. Mario looks pretty good. ut I don't see why in table tennis they didn't let you use your miis, just mommy daddy sarah and billy. But this could be my first Dr. Mario game, I'm hoping one of my wii friends will send me a demo first.

KnucklesSonic8

5. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 14:32 BST

Yeah, agreed. Mii incorporation would have been nice but for only 500 Points, this truly seems like a bargain when you consider how much more depth it has over MSOG's and Wii Play's Table Tennis.

As for Dr. Mario, I'm not getting it but I hope someone gets me the demo as I really want to play Online with owners of the full-fledged game. And quite frankly, I think that was a great choice on their part because I have a feeling it may convince me to buy the full thing, who knows? :o

But I'm glad Helix, Major League Eating and/or Home Sweet Home didn't appear this week. It's better without those titles... for now at least. I was looking forward to this week and I'm not disappointed. :)

Don't worry. I got a feeling we'll see Toki Tori soon.

Finally Dr. Mario.

Kevin

9. Kevin United States 26 May 2008, 15:06 BST

What's MSOG? Please just spell it out instead of abbreviating everything.

MyAnonBox

10. MyAnonBox United States 26 May 2008, 15:21 BST

MSOG = Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

And thanks for the review. For me it was concise and answered all of my questions. How much is the game? How similar is it to the original? Do I have to use motion controls?

The same gameplay with nicer graphics is just what I wanted. And $10 for that and a few extras is good for me - I just paid that much for Pokemon Snap which I hated. $10 for this in the stores would be a steal, I'm off to buy now.

Whats up with everybody changing there avatars ?
I didn't reconize it was you kevin at first .
When i get around to uploading my avatar i be leaving it as is .

Anyway both games looks boring to me .

@Kawaiipikachu: Variety is the spice of life! Seriously, I thought it was time for me to change it.

RoastingGhost

Always good to have more online competition, although I must warn you: six extra days to practice counts for quite a lot.

KnucklesSonic8

14. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 16:09 BST

Wow. Reminds me like Strikers. ;)

Sorry about "MSOG". I use abbreviations for Wii games a lot, such as SatSR, SMBBB, RRR, MP8, etc. I just assumed people knew what I meant. xD

Anyway, I can't wait for Toki Tori now!!!! :D
You guys gotta wait one more hour. I have to wait till I get home.

I got a feeling my sib will coax me to get Table Tennis. Hope the Review comes up tonight or tomorrow.

thewiirocks

Table Tennis? Man, I was promised Toki Tori. I'm so disappointed. :(

Pegasus

17. Pegasus United States 26 May 2008, 16:47 BST

I would have liked to have seen Toki Tori, but, then again, it's not like I've had an awful lot of time to play anything, lately - I have yet to finish LostWinds. It's nice to finally have Dr Mario, though. Good times! :)

thewiirocks

18. thewiirocks United States 26 May 2008, 16:50 BST

Well, the good news is that Family Table Tennis appears to be priced right. Here's to pricing games at the ideal price the market will bear! :)

KnucklesSonic8

19. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 16:55 BST

Indeed! Table Tennis seems so greatly priced to be at 500 Points, hm?

I would have LOVED Toki Tori. My excitement for it just came up starting today. I hope we get it next week in June! :D

Then again, Major League Eating has been confirmed for next week.

Objection_Blaster

20. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 17:45 BST

My predictions for the next 3 weeks of Wiiware:
NEXT WEEK: 2 of the following: Gyrostarr :), Toki Tori :), Major League Eating :(
1st MONDAY of JUNE: 1 of the above and hopefully Strongbad Episode 1 :)
OTHER LIKELYS: Helix, that Pirate game, Home Sweet Home
This is mostly speculation though.

KnucklesSonic8

21. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 17:51 BST

BTW, Obj_Blaster, next week IS the first Monday of June. xD

My Predictions:
June 2nd:
Helix
Toki Tori - Really hope so.
Major League Eating - Near-definite.

June 9th:
Home Sweet Home
Gyrostarr - Hope it comes June 2nd instead, though, but I doubt it.
SPOGS Racing

ChocoDK

22. ChocoDK Canada 26 May 2008, 17:55 BST

Well I guess the saying is true "You can't have your cake and eat it too."

Oh well I was looking forward to Toki Tori and don't care about Dr. Mario RX. But I can't complain at all. Its a good week overall and Metal Slug did come out.

Objection_Blaster

23. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 17:56 BST

@Knuckles
...oh yeah. Sweet. Okay, my IDEAL LIST would be:
1st Monday of June: Toki Tori or Gyrostarr and Strongbad Episode 1
Week after: The remanider from above and Helix
CRAP LIST: MLE and SPOGS (maybe HSH too unless it is deep and MLAAK awesome
BTW, why isnt Strongbad on your list?! Don't make me give you a pummeling.

Objection_Blaster

24. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 17:58 BST

I only wanted Dr Mario this week for one reason: so other people would be happy (and shut up :) )
Now if only Earthbound would come out, people's pissing and moaning would drop a further 40%! (Because the Majoras Mask and Yoshi Island people are less annoying) EARTHBOUND!

Dazza

25. Dazza United Kingdom 26 May 2008, 17:59 BST

@Objection_Blaster - Can you save these comments for VC Reviews please? Oh wait, I see you already did! :p

KnucklesSonic8

26. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 18:07 BST

Obj_Blaster: Those aren't necessarily the titles I want. Those are the titles I'm confident in will release based on varying sources of information.

Strongbad: Don't think it'll be out at the beginning of the month. And I don't plan to get Strongbad, as surprising as that is, unless someone can convince me otherwise. Does it contain mature content?

Objection_Blaster

27. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 18:08 BST

@Dazza
Sorry if you thought that was off topic/double-posting but I was making the point that Dr Mario and Earthbound were the most wanted and now that we have one if we had the other people would complain a lot less.

Objection_Blaster

28. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 18:11 BST

@Knuckles
Well maybe not the beginning but soemtiem in June. I am really looking forward to Strongbad but I like games like Phoenix Wright. As for mature content, it will probably be rated E10 or Teen in NA for (mild) crude humor, language, violence
But nothing very dirty or extreme. Check out the website homestarrunner.com for its origin! :) Not trying to be an advertiser but I really want that game. And this is related to this story! Somehow... :P

Kenji510

29. Kenji510 United States 26 May 2008, 18:20 BST

@KnucklesSonic8- I am really excited and thank you nintendo for bringing this game here today... im gonna go and download this game right now and play it!!... the family table tennis game looks pretty cool and fun too and i think im gonna download that game also!!

KnucklesSonic8

30. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 19:02 BST

@Obj_Blaster: Yep, I'm aware of its origins already. I've heard things in the past about mature content such as swearing that's why I asked. If it's E10+ I MAY give it a shot. Is it like an Adevneture game akin to Zack and Wiki/Sam and Max in terms of... umm... point-and-click (and-move) gameplay?

@Kenji: Told you! Your hopes most cerrtainly weren't misplaced!! :D
And yeah, let me know how you like Family Table Tennis. It does look fun. :) Enjoy Dr. Mario. I look forward to playing you when someone gifts me the demo. Send me your Friend Code via Wii Message.

Kenji510

31. Kenji510 United States 26 May 2008, 19:03 BST

@KnucklesSonic8- Family Table Tennis is pretty fun too and just played like a few mins ago... oh i will enjoy play Dr. Mario today and i send you a message too for the demo.. hope u get it and we battle online!

Objection_Blaster

32. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 19:30 BST

@Knuckles
Yeah it is a point and click like Sam and Max because it is amde by the same people

KnucklesSonic8

33. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 20:13 BST

Thanks guys, heh. :)

@Kenji: Great to hear you like FTT. What's the ACTUAL size on the Channels Save Data?

Also, thanks. Please DO send me the demo. When I get home, hopefully we can play!! :D Send me your Friend Code. :)

@Obj_Blaster: Yeah, I figured but I had no idea they made Sam and Max. Who knew.

Kenji510

34. Kenji510 United States 26 May 2008, 20:34 BST

@KnucklesSonic8- yeah i did liked FTT... the space takes about around Block Size 274... kinda big for space to have.

Sure no problem... i send you a demo already or message for it as well.. check your wii when u get home and ill send you my Dr. Mario friend code as well.

KnucklesSonic8

35. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 20:55 BST

Great, thank you very much, bud. I'll definitely check it once I get home.

And thanks for confirming the Block Size for me. Dazza said it was 274 but when he said it was the size on the "Wii Shop", I explained that sometimes the blocks indicated on the Wii Shop (when you start) differ from the actual block/base size but anyway... That's quite a big file... geez. And this game is so simple, too (essentially). It's not like it's an extensive game or anything! XD

Objection_Blaster

36. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 21:22 BST

@Kenji
Me too. I want demo ;)
Back on topic, I think that Wiiware has been a lot better than everyone says. Launch brought us like 2-4 must haves and we've only had 2-3 crappy games out of 10 so far. Thats a lot better than VC :P

but Dr. Mario definitely makes this week a good one. :)

Corbie

43. Corbie United States 27 May 2008, 02:48 BST

No I was just trying to find something I liked. I think I'll be sticking with this avatar for awhile. :)

And I like this Family Table Tennis. Nice cel-shaded look and the game play is pretty solid. About the only complaint I have is that sometimes you don't feel like you have a lot of control over the swings. Nice music too.

StarDust

44. StarDust United States 27 May 2008, 03:34 BST

I just got back from my Memorial Day trip. I had 900 Wii Points for my "Goodie Bag", but alas, no Toki Tori. So I guess I will be forced to buy some more points with "Mr Debit" so that I can download Dr Mario. I will probably pass on Table Tennis seeing as how I can already play tennis on Wii Sports, and everybody who owns a Wii should have this game.

BTW, funny thing, Dr Mario only requires 93 blocks in USA, much smaller than the PAL version.

Phantom5800

45. Phantom5800 United States 27 May 2008, 05:13 BST

Sweet, I've been playing Dr. Mario almost all day since I got it. Now with 1000 points left over I'll be waiting patiently for Toki Tori to make it overseas ... or just for Earthbound ... or a N64 game I am interested in. And If none of that comes before Strongbad, I will be disappointed.

Rapadash6

46. Rapadash6 United States 27 May 2008, 15:19 BST

Yay! Finally we get Dr. Mario! Next up on the downloading block, Toki Tori! I find it unsettling that Nintendo is still holding onto Pokemon Ranch. Not that it's a game I want, because it's definately NOT, but because Nintendo will likely use it as an excuse to delay thier own major VC releases even further.

ni

47. ni Canada 27 May 2008, 18:00 BST

Sorry to be off-topic...but is there anywhere to look to find out which wiiware games are widescreen and/or 480P? Would it be possible to list this type of information in the reviews?

Clayfrd

48. Clayfrd United States 27 May 2008, 18:26 BST

That was a nice surprise! I just DL'd Dr. Mario. I was playing, and I accidentally hit my GCN controller and the cursor moved! Hurrah! I wasn't paying much attention to the download screen! I'll probably use the classic GCN pad from now on. I prefer the multiplayer version of Flash online to the traditional version. I'm about 2 and 2. Hopefully with practice I can contend with some people better than I currently am. I actually have never really beaten anyone at Flash. I won twice because my opponent topped out twice! Oh, well. I guess I'm just good at barely surviving. Before I post, does anyone at WiiWare-World mind if I post my friend code? (For Dr. Mario, of course)

Clayfrd

49. Clayfrd United States 27 May 2008, 20:01 BST

Nevermind! I finally won an official game of flash without my opponent failing.
