Something fishy is going on here. Ahem.

Something fishy is going on here. Ahem.

Hudson has kindly informed us that its interactive fish tank game My Aquarium is due for release sometime this month.

In order to get you all excited, the company has also produced a new trailer for English-speaking markets. It's down there, below the next paragraph. Are we good to you or what?

As you can see the game is set to feature all kinds of fishy goings-on and could end up being something of a hit with some of the ‘casual’ Wii owners. The game will allow extensive customization of your tank, different breeds of fish and even the ability to send your pets to other Wii owners via the WiiConnect24 service.

Here's some more information from the press release published today:

My Aquarium is an all-new, original IP for digital download on WiiWare, providing a virtual aquarium for people of all ages to create a captivating and relaxing atmosphere in front of the Wii. No need for a real aquarium - the fish tank in My Aquarium can be customized with different backgrounds, gravel styles, decorations, plant life, and of course, fish!

In My Aquarium, Wii owners can choose the fish that will live in their aquarium and what decorations they'll get to enjoy. Choose the glass color, lighting, background design, style of gravel, rocks, or plant life for the world the fish will inhabit, and mix and match different fish in up to 6 individual aquariums. Owner can even send aquariums to friends using WiiConnect24 if they also have My Aquarium.

Other features of My Aquarium include:

  • A wide selection of colorful fish - Choose from 40 different types of fish, from clownfish to jellyfish. Both freshwater and saltwater fish can cohabit just fine. If you want to feed your fish, you can choose from a variety of food. You can even interact with your fish and keep a watchful eye on your favorite. Learn more about your fish in the Fish Database.
  • Interacts with the Forecast Channel - Tank conditions change depending on the weather in your area!
  • Focused on Fun -You can simply relax and enjoy the fish. Don't worry about water temperatures or other special knowledge needed for a real aquarium. My Aquarium requires only your imagination.

Yes, finally. It looks like it could be good, simple fun so i'll probably buy this

Unless those "fishy goings-on" include breeding, I'll stick with my real aquarium.

Maybe they should have made this a "Viva Pinata in a Fish Tank" type of game.

How much is this???

I have a variety of Virtual Fish tanks on my on:demand set top box avaiable for 24 hour rental for about £2 but the kids love them... surely this is going to be a cheaper alternative.

The sad thing is this will probably end up one of the most downloaded wiiware titles and yet it isnt any kind of game as such... what next Recepie Books on my Nintendo DS. lol .... hang on, there is - Nooooooooooooooh!!!!

I don't mind a game like this selling. If it does what it sets out to do and does it well, then it deserves to shift copies. It's games like Pong Toss that should be ignored.

I can see a lot of casual gamers (and people with kids) lapping this up.

@Damo
dont worry, I will end up buying this game (people with kids), you just dont want wiiware being flooded with bad copies of this kind of games or even worse PetZ games, aaaaggh!!
I actually imagine this "game" will be good, especially if wiiconnect24 is as good as it sounds.

... on a side note, I actually found the cooking guide on the DS a good idea, just dont tell anybody ;)

I actually like the look of this, and as long as it isn't too pricey (preferably 800 points) and there is a little more depth than what the trailer shows then I'll be happy.

Oh, and what if I don't feed my fish or I'm going on holiday for a couple of weeks?

(PS: When's that Strongbad review coming?)

Isn't it 500 points?

maybe it will just be a good dorm room fishtank

This looks like a quality non-game. Unforcunately, thats what seperates it from my shopping list.

It will shoot up in the charts, any 500 Point game without downloadable content will sell extremely well and since it is friendly to all players it will sell greatly. Also $5 for virtual fish and evrything they need or $50 for everything they need in real life, not counting they die more easily in real life, not to be off topic or anything but I have lost 7 fish in One Year, also I'm not counting labor you must commit to a fishtank so look at the odds of this selling good. i will probably buy this game though.

If I wasn't spending tons of Wii Points to add to my massive collection (I'm getting Star Parodier andd saving for MM9 with my next 2000 pints card) I would actually look into this. It looks kind of cool, sort of like SimCity except with fish. Ughn, this site makes we want to buy so much!

I hope you can watch your tank in the Channels screen :D
Will it come this month for US or Europe? Or both?

I'm not interested in this. I already on a real fish tank and even it gets ignored, so the chances of anyone in my house using this game is slim-to-none.
@ Tabbyluigi
Do you have salt-water fish or something? Fish in my home typically live for a very long amount of time and we are very bad at taking care of them (cleaning their tank, etc.). Maybe you need to feed them more often?

I'm not entirely sold. Most of it has to do with already having Endless Ocean. Looks neat though, especially for 500 Wii Points. It's also cool that it uses Wiiconnect24 and the Forecast Channel. It'd be cool if you could import your MP3 files like you can in Endless. ...I guess the biggest hurdle this game has is being called the lesser version of Endless with its price, size, and lazzie-faire approach to gaming, whereas Endless lets you swim and directly interact with animals. Both are relaxing and can teach players about fish. I don't know yet. I still have 600 points left, but I may save it for Gravtronix or Eternity's Child.

No I do not have salt water fish, another thing that will make this game sell better, you can have salt-water fish without a hassel and a half, but I had fish that don't live long, they were Platties, don't buy em they last about a month, lost 4 of em. The first fish I bought which is a Beta Fish is still living and guess what It dosen't kill my fish, the other 3 were older goldfish. So all I've got is Beta Fish and a young Goldfish. Also I take very good care of them. Oh well hopefully fish won't die as easily on this game as in real life.

I'll try any game that you give me to play even the bad ones, but thats not why I'm wanting it, its because it looks very unique and it is very cheap.

i wonder if the fish grow in this game and if they breed because tht would make it have more depth and for 500 points i might get this

Peznaze

20. Peznaze United States 12 Aug 2008, 20:28 BST

There's little point in being able to send fish to friends if they aren't customizable in some way, but I don't see much evidence of this.

Pong Toss took #1 recently, didn't it? I guess this can do well, too, then.

Where the heck is everyone thinking it's 500?

Chipmunk777

Hah.... No thanks. I work at Petsmart and I get to see enough "fishy goings-on" when I'm scrubbing algae out of 70+ fish tanks :P

But I must say, the fish in the game do look very authentic, and it seems like they'll have some good variety as well (saltwater fish without all the work!)

This does not look bad. It's looks inspired by Endless Ocean.
This is a different game geared towards casual, but I am cool with it. Hudson don't take too long with Alien Crush

I'm not sure what to think of these types of "software." You can't call them games really. I like fish, and it would be nice not to have to clean the aquariuam, but really? I need some kind of objective to have a desire to play.

Though with how much work I've been bring home lately, this might be the perfect game to "play" while I'm writing articles...
