EU WiiWare Update: Mega Man 9, Strong Bad Ep 2 and Helix

Posted Thu, 25 Sep 2008 by Marcel Van Duyn

The Blue Bomber arrives in Europe!

The Blue Bomber arrives in Europe!

You'd better have some Wii Points ready as there are three new games are available today, and all of them are good! All three have already been out in North America for a short time, so it can be considered somewhat of a catch-up update.

Mega Man 9 needs no introduction unless you have been living in a cave for the past few months! The game has been designed by Capcom to look, sound and play just like a NES game. That means there's 8-bit graphics, a catchy retro-esque soundtrack, and of course, a high difficulty level! Of course, as our review will tell you, this makes it every bit as addictive and good as its six 8-bit cousins. This is pretty much the ultimate fan-service. We personally hope many other developers follow Capcom's example.

Strong Badia the Free is the second episode in the Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People series. It basically plays exactly the same as the first game, but has a different story which is completely unrelated to that of the first. If you liked the first episode, you'll like this - If you didn't, this isn't gonna change your mind!

Finally, today Helix is available in Europe as well. Since its US release it has gotten quite a mixed bunch of reviews - The opinions on it are certainly some of the more divided of any WiiWare title so far. We thought it was a good game - If you like rhythm games, we recommend it!

I'm gonna play nothing but Mega Man 9 for the next few days! How about you?

WOOT! I said that I wasn't posting any more comments until I got to be part of MM9. So, here I am. Also getting SBE2, though am unhappy I have to delete yet another game to make room :(
Might get Helix in the future (say, if there's a WW games drought), but right now I'm put off by the music selection.

Right then, off I go to MM: tonight I'm crying myself to sleep...

@Mailanbr (two comments below) - I know that, its just a pain in the arse to do EVERY time a new game comes out. Here's hoping Ninty are gonna sort out that storage system soon...

Avatar

9. mailanbr United States 26 Sep 2008, 00:26 GMT

@WiiloveitOnline
You wont have to delete a game for it. You could put it on your SD card (if you have one that is). The SD card will only re-copy back to Wii a channel if that wii it is copying to has the same Wii Code as it did before. Also, if you happen to delete a game, and dont have an SD card, well thats still okay. You can re-download a game you have already bought off the Wii Shop Channel for free. So I hope this helps you somewhat with your problem!

Great to get 3 games in a week, although as a relative newbie to the Nintendo world (and therefore having never played any of the MegaMan games), I am not that excited.

Was far happier with the recent Bomberman and Midnight Pool week, that was an expensive Friday! Hope you 'across the pond folk' get Bomberman next week.

p.s. First post on this site, love it!

Megaman 9 is so hard.

The only stage I did somewhat well in was Galaxy Man's stage. But even then I didn't get to meet him in person.

I just hope that I won't be put off by the game's difficulty because I sometimes stop playing a game completely if I just can't get anywhere on it.

Avatar

53. Corbie United States 26 Sep 2008, 09:46 GMT

Don't give up. If I can beat it, anyone can. :)

Avatar

54. Dazza United Kingdom 26 Sep 2008, 10:07 GMT

@Bass X0 - I am finding it seriously hard going too.

My advice is to start out with Galaxy Man, he's not too hard to beat if you can manage to get to him! Just keep practicing!

Once defeated I would then advise trying to tackle Jewel Man. With the black hole bomb he is a piece of cake.

When you have Jewel Man's Jewel Satellite you will find a lot of the stages much easier as it is a pretty good shield.

I am stuck on Tornado Man's stage now, it's just plain evil :-p

55. Justtim Germany 26 Sep 2008, 10:08 GMT

Arrrrr, that f*cking rotating plattforms in Tormado Mans stage made me throw my Controller the first time since PS1 times. I´m loving it :)
But maybe i should stick this "safety loop thing" to my wiimote...

Avatar

56. Bass X0 United Kingdom 26 Sep 2008, 11:08 GMT

Yeah, I just beat Galaxy Man a few minutes ago. That was a pretty easy stage and boss to be honest, only died once and that was on the boss.. Memorising the level and boss patterns is the most effective weapon to beat Megaman games. And now I've got to go out soon and get Wario Land Shake. Compared to Megaman 9, it'll probably be childishly easy.

Avatar

57. Kevin United States 26 Sep 2008, 11:35 GMT

It is an easy stage but it takes a long time to beat him if you choose him first. I'll be playing Mega Man 9 for a LONG time!

I got Wario Land: Shake It. I've never played a Mega Man Game, but I beat the first world and boss and didn't even have to restart a level. True it is fun, but incredibly easy so if you want a good easy fun platformer than this is it. Its just so easy....From what I heard about this game is that of Living Hell....

Avatar

62. wesleyh Belgium 26 Sep 2008, 12:19 GMT

Bought Helix... It's fun but it's pretty stupid at the same time..

1) You can do other moves at the correct time and it will still register correctly. Big flaw..
2) On hard there are some sequences that are just too fast to handle.. The character moves too fast to see all the moves and it's impossible to take into account timing.

I got close to beating Magma Man and close to reaching splash woman.
According to IGN when you add Protoman to the game you cannot access the shop to buy E and M tanks. Thats hardcore

I'll say it again MM9 is one of the best of the series despite its difficulty

Avatar

I hope this patter of Europe getting 3 WiiWare games continues. Unless NOE is trying to catch up with the American WiiWare catalog similarly to how they gave 5 VC game weeks and then reduced them when they caught up to America. :(

Avatar

Avatar

69. Tony United States 26 Sep 2008, 14:48 GMT

@ Bass
Its true

Here is the a section by Mark Bozon

"The changes are basic, but they make a huge difference. For starters, Proto Man can slide, so you've got instant evasion against low-hopping enemies and a few specific bosses (it saved our butt a few times on Magma Man, but don' t bother trying to slide under Galaxy during his second attack phase; it won't work). This would also let you get into a few pesky little areas that you otherwise couldn't go, such as the large bolt hidden on Plug Man's stage, but that brings us to the second major change for Proto Man Mode, which is the lack of a store and bolts, also eliminating support items, and extra E and M tanks." (Bozon, 2008)

@RetroWare
I'm pretty sure that during the lazer part of the Quick Man level, there is a large energy replenisher, but its pretty risky to grab. If you can't manage it, I would recommend starting that part without freezing time, and then use Flash Man's power like halfway through, when you feel like the lazers are catching up to you.

That's all off memory, I haven't played the game in years, but I'm almost positive that energy capsule is there.

Avatar

80. RetroWare United States 26 Sep 2008, 19:12 GMT

Thanks lockelocks, that energy replenisher does kinda help, but I don't understand why I can't activate the time stop power and then stop it. Its just a waste of the meter.

Phantom: its one of those masks from Super Mario bros 2 I think. The ones that chase you when you lift a key. :p

Not a bad week for Europe. ^^

Now let's hope the VC release next week will be as good.

Well, I'll still rent Samba de Amiga Wii. I definitely plan on buying Wario Land: Shake it! and de Blob, though.

@Corbie

Whoa, I didn't even notice that you changed your avatar! Guess I'm so used to seeing it.

Yep, it's a "Phanto" mask from Super Mario Bros. 2. :)

Too much avatar changing! Is no one but me satisfied with theirs? Anyway, I heard the same about Samba de Amigo's controls and both de Blob and Wario look like good weekend rentals, but I don't know if I'd buy them at full price.

@Phantom. Corbie found/ made a good pick for ya! It's very fitting!

@Corbie. Curious question: If I didn't have an avatar already, what sorta pick would you have given me? A jar of Cheez Whiz? :P

@ Mr. Cheez

He sure did, I didn't have an avatar for the longest time because I couldn't find one that fit just right. But Corbie fixed that problem for me :-)
Also if I were Corbie I would've given you a picture of Swiss Cheese for your avatar :-P

I changed my avatar again. I'll keep changing it until I get something I like. Or Corbie changes it. After all, nobody messes with Corbie.
