Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (1st Oct)

Mega Man 9 is #1 again, quelle surprise!

Mega Man 9 is #1 again, quelle surprise!

It’s Wednesday again, time to look at what the most popular games are in the Wii Shop. To check for yourself simply log on to your Wii Shop channel, go into the WiiWare section and then view “Popular Games”.

We are checking the list for the USA region, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be a lot different. Feel free to post your findings below as always.

Remember the list below is a measure of sales made recently, not the total time the game has been on sale.

Here is the list for 1st October:

1 (1) - Mega Man 9
2 (2) - My Aquarium
3 (3) - Strong Bad Episode 2 - Strong Badia the Free
4 (4) - My Pokémon Ranch
5 (5) - Dr Mario Online Rx
6 (N) - Bomberman Blast
7 (6) - Strong Bad Episode 1 - Homestar Ruiner
8 (7) - Defend your Castle
9 (8) - Wild West Guns
10 (9) - Frat Party Games - Pong Toss
11 (10) - TV Show King
12 (11) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
13 (13) - LostWinds
14 (N) - Art Style: Orbient
15 (14) - Midnight Pool
16 (15) - Family Table Tennis
17 (12) - Groovin’ Blocks
18 (17) - V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack
19 (18) - Gyrostarr
20 (19) - Cocoto Fishing Master

N denotes a new entry

It should be no surprise to discover that Mega Man 9 holds the top spot for its second week, go blue bomber! There is no change in the entire top 5, Strong Bad Episode 2 is still struggling to get ahead of the formidable fishtank simulation that is My Aquarium.

Bomberman Blast makes an impressive debut at #6, not bad for a game released two days ago. Art Style: Orbient popped into the charts at #14, which isn’t bad considering that we have not seen one bit of promotional material from Nintendo on this game, heck we had to take our own screenshots for the game page!

Poor old Potpourrii still hasn’t managed to hit the charts yet! As it came out over 2 weeks ago now we find that somewhat amazing, one can only wonder how poor the sales have been. The infamous Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint also failed to make an appearance this week which again can only indicate poor sales. Back to the drawing board Bplus!

This weeks casualties are the fun rhythm game Helix and Breakout clone, Block Breaker Deluxe. It’s a shame as both are decent games. Isn’t it about time that we said goodbye to Family Table Tennis and Cocoto Fishing by now?

As always, have your say on this week’s findings below.

why is My Aquarium doing so well?

2. Wiiloveit United Kingdom 01 Oct 2008, 19:17 GMT

No surprises here then. Although Plattchen and Potpourri weren't exactly brilliant, it's still a shame to see them do so badly.

Oh, and 1st post, woo!
EDIT: Damn you BassXO. You spend all your time on VC reviews and then return to WWW by stealing my first post glory :(

The reason My Aquarium is doing well is because its a value for 500 points. Its actually fun to check in on your fish everyday. I put it on while I am on the computer. Its very relaxing. Also my Jellyfish and Piranha both had babies.

The only reason I can think that Pong Toss is still on the list is because we Amercians love repetitive wrist motions and carpal tunnel surgery :P

I think its because My Aquarium is good at what it does. It is a fish tank sim. and not a game. It was not hastily thrown together by Hudson and looks nice too.

Also for the hype Mega Man 9 is getting, I think it deserves all of it. It's my favorite Wii Ware game so far. It's also one of my favorite Mega Man games as well.

My Aquarium is a very good game actually.
And I'm a hardcore gamer.

Word, My Aquarium is quality. I'm hooked.
Anyone unlock the seahorse?

8. Wiiloveit United Kingdom 01 Oct 2008, 20:34 GMT

I'm just not happy it sells so well, since the main reason is that it's 500 points. Plus, the novelty of it wears off after time. Maybe if I had enough storage space to keep it all of the time, I'd appreciate it more. Nintendo had better announce a good storage solution tomorrow along with the apparant "new" DS and the "game everybody's been waiting for". If not, I am gonna spam them like they've never been spammed before.

Also: I'm getting really p!ssed with MM9, since the difficulty nearly made me lose an eye (wear the wrist straps, kids). LostWinds is still my favourite WW game so far, closely followed by Bomberman.

Edit: I changed the naughty word for younger eyes :D Though MM does deserve it

And Mega Man better be staying in that first spot, for as long as it can/should/MUST. I'm quite surprised by the UK's #1, though -- not saying that My Aquarium is a bad game, because it isn't (it's rather delightful), but still.

@WiiloveitOnline: Give it some time, and you'll get used to the levels' design and memorise the enemies. I thought Tornado Man was impossible on the first day of downloading, but by the second day of playing the game, his level became the second easiest. Or maybe I just love it as a level, I don't know * grins *.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised that Orbient made it onto the top 20. I thought it might be too strange for most Wii owners, but maybe there are enought gamers who read internet stuff buying Wiiware. I'll pick it up when I work through some of my current games.

Hopefully the failure of Potpourii and Plattchen to even get on the top 20 will make developers stop and think about the quality of a title they want to make. There's plenty of good puzzlers to be had on Wiiware, if you're making another one (aside from Goo) it better be decent!

Edit: And when are we getting an Orbient review? WiiFanboy has theirs up now and it's also very favorable, so two good reviews that I know of (IGN is the other one).

18. Objection_Blaster United States 01 Oct 2008, 22:13 GMT

@vherub I don't really see the point in that.
As for tyhe charts, decent showing by Bomberman and even Orbital! Other than that, no exciting changes...

Avatar

19. breaderer United States 01 Oct 2008, 22:39 GMT

Nintendo hasn't done that with the VC so I don't think they will do it for wiiware either.

Mega man 9 is still on top! It's gonna take a damn good game to topple Mega man. I wonder what it will be?

It'll either be this one.
This one.
Or this one.
Okay, I just threw that last one in for giggles.

20) MaBoShi
Come back MaBoShi...don't let SPOGS beat you :( As for My Aqarium at number 1...at least it isn't My Pokemon Ranch...

As for the US charts, Bomberman beaten by Dr.Mario...wha?

In general. Man has Platchan bombed beyond anyones wildest dreams...

Edit: x.SuperMario.x. Butterfly Garden might just be the next My Aquarium...its a nice non-violent theme (though it seems the butterflies can be eaten :( ), which probably means it'll be dead on arrival on XBLA :(

Avatar

23. Objection_Blaster United States 01 Oct 2008, 23:59 GMT

@supermario
With today's gamers as they are, that last one will probably win.

Avatar

24. Ricardo91 United States 02 Oct 2008, 00:09 GMT

Wasn't expecting Orbient to hit #14 in it's first week, since hardly anyone knew about it, especially given all those casual gamers, who are are less internet-savvy. Must be the price. Or word of mouth.
And Bomberman already at #6! WOOO!!

@Shadows. I feel the pain too. I sure miss that cute little chicken! :(

25. AlexSays United States 02 Oct 2008, 00:18 GMT

Word of mouth?
Not sure where you work, but we don't discuss WiiWare around watercooler.
I can't even see kids going around school, "Hey, see those VC releases yet?!"
I'd go with the price theory.

Avatar

26. Ricardo91 United States 02 Oct 2008, 00:26 GMT

@Supermario. Nah, those first 2 games are too good. It's much more likely to be the last one. ;)

Or more likely this,
this,
this,
or possibly this.

Thanks for the BBCoding tips by the way! :)

28. Twilight Crow Mexico 02 Oct 2008, 01:09 GMT

Nothing special on today charts, Megaman doing well as it should, Bomberman coming from behind, the couple of no so good puzzlers totally out of sight; still, I hoped Groovin' Blocks would do better this week but with such rivals it's getting harder too climb up, but look at ORBIENT, I'm glad for Nintendo's little piece of art, a few more games like that and Pong Toss will be out (well 10 more games like that :P). Btw I miss Toki tori too :(

@x.supermario.x
Don't underestimate Butterflies, and don't overestimate those first two games, remember what hyping can do, and who knows what casuals may choose.

It's a shame when a bunch of damn fish floating around is in the Top 3 and Star Soldier R is nowhere to be found. Maybe they need to bring Darius to WiiWare and capitalize on the sudden popularity of fish. Or maybe a fish RPG :P

Echoing the quality comments on My Aquarium.
-a gamer since the 2600 days

As for the charts, my WiiWare purchases so far consist of MegaMan 9, Bomberman Blast, My Aquarium, Dr Mario, & Wild West Guns, of which the first 4 I think stay on the charts for a LONG time.
I obviously also think we see Bomberman Blast raise in the charts quickly. Seems to be quite a large contingent that are just getting around to purchasing it, as the release wasn't publicized like MegaMan 9's was.....we just had to wait and see if it popped up on WiiWare. That game is a blast (hah, pun not intended) to play, and will have great staying/replay power.
And I anticipate Tetris Party & even Alien Crush Returns debuting relatively high when they come out soon as well.....both with multiplayer online.

Nice to see the list finally stabilizing with solid titles....just a few more to weed out (FTT, CFM, etc).....

@ lockelocke , re: seahorse
Yeah, I've got 49 fish....so far.... (don't know how many are possible - these extra past 40 were unknown to me before I started and discussed on the Gamestop forums (zenace33)).
All 40 initial unlocked, 8 normal secret/hidden fish, and 1 special secret/hidden fish (ie unable to be shared), as well as a special secret/hidden object.....

You need the seahorse? I could probably send it to you. Either PM me on GS, or post on here, and I'll try to remember to check this entry again.

(wish forums were up here already, or that we could post our friend codes in our profile ;) :p)

@Corbie--Hopefully they are working on another Star Soldier title. If it is a full game, not Time-Trial/ Score-Run-Based, but has an actual campaign, then I know I and many others would get it.

@Objection_Blaster. I hope so too. Paying 8 bucks for a 2-level game is a ripoff IMO, even with online leaderboards.

@Corbie. "or maybe a fish RPG"
Legend of the River King Wii, perhaps?

@Vherub. I don't think extending the top 20 list to 30 would be a good idea. We'd just hear more "SAVE STAR SOLDIER R! WAAAAHH!!" comments from the admins. :P

WiiWare's "Popular Titles" for 10.05.2008 in NA:

1 (1) - Mega Man 9
2 (2) - My Aquarium
3 (6) - Bomberman Blast
4 (3) - Strong Bad Episode 2 - Strong Badia the Free
5 (5) - Dr. Mario Online RX
6 (14) - Art Style: ORBIENT
7 (4) - My Pokemon Ranch
8 (6) - Defend Your Castle
9 (7) - Strong Bad Episode 1 - Homestar Ruiner
10 (9) - Wild West Guns
11 (10) - Frat Party Games - Pong Toss
12 (11) - TV Show King
13 (12) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
14 (13) - LostWinds
15 (15) - Midnight Pool
16 (16) - Family Table Tennis
17 (18) - V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack
18 (20) - Cocoto Fishing Master
19 (19) - Gyrostarr
20 (17) - Groovin' Blocks

Several changes in today's ranking where Art Style is climbing up the charts probably due to good word of mouth. The 600 Wii Points price also is a factor of course. My Pokemon Ranch and Defend Your Castle is slowly making their descent while SPOGS is officially out of the Popular 20. Don't rejoice yet because it looks like Groovin' Blocks might say adieu starting tomorrow which is a shame being that the game is actually pretty fun.
