USA WiiWare Update: World Of Goo & Art Style: Cubello

Posted Mon, 13 Oct 2008 by Darren Calvert

Watch out for Fisty!

Watch out for Fisty!

The time has arrived; today you can finally get acquainted with what may well be the best game to hit WiiWare to date. Yes we’re talking about World of Goo of course! The WiiWare World team have been enjoying the PC version of the game all week which the nice chaps at 2D Boy supplied us with. Amazingly it surpassed all our expectations, it’s hard to pick fault with anything, yes it is THAT good!

Our review will be ready a little later today as we want to try out the WiiWare specific features such as the 4 player co-op and of course how the game controls with the Wii Remote instead of a mouse. We recommend that only the most cautious of our readers wait for the review however, you can safely buy this at 9am Pacific time without hesitation. For 1500 Wii points ($15) you can’t go wrong, this is even more of a bargain when you consider that the PC version costs $20 and is single player.

You might be interested in the interview with 2D Boy we did back in August also.

Phew, after all that gushing, there is also the second game in the Art Style series for WiiWare. This time it is the turn of Art Style: Cubello which would appear to be a brand new game not a bit Generations remake. We had originally thought it might be Coloris but it seems to be quite different from what we can tell now. For 600 Wii points you can probably safely take a chance on this, but if you are in doubt you might want to wait a day or so for our review.

It’s been a phenomenal update on WiiWare today, but the fun doesn’t stop there. On the Virtual Console gamers are treated to the sublime Super Nintendo RPG Secret of Mana. What more do we need to say? The Sega Genesis is not neglected either with Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition which some claim is a better port of the arcade classic than the Super Nintendo versions!

I hope you bought a big stash of Wii points over the weekend because you are going to need them! :D

I can't stomach the $15 price tag for WoG just yet. I'm going to need an extremely positive review and a few slow weeks in order to amp up my desire. Secret of Mana, however, needs no such salesmanship!

What a brilliant week...off to VC-reviews to say something similar...

Though technically I can't buy any of those due to having a PAL Wii...or can i? :P

YEAH! I'm glad I have more than enough Wii Points! Only thing is, I need room!!!! :(

I'm definitely gonna get both and I still wanna get Orbient. Something's gonna have to go but what?!

If someone finds out how many blocks both are, please post.

Stop the presses Cubello probably isn't coloris...
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13200657&postcount=25953
Or if it is it Coloriscube (like Tetrisphere is Tetris but isn't).

Edit: The press releases mentions something about shooting cubes...coloris didn't allow you to shoot colours; only change the ones that were there...

So much for lowering my Wii Point spending...

@ Starwolf_UK
If it's not Coloris, than what is it?

Avatar

13. Starwolf_UK United Kingdom 13 Oct 2008, 14:13 GMT

It is something new which has the following known similarity:
-Arrangements of the same colour will vanish (that describes pretty much any puzzle game)
coloris required three of the same colour, this uses four. Coloris had no rotation in it or shooting blocks...

Edit: I'll just take the bit of the press release:
Art Style: CUBELLO (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Art Style: CUBELLO mixes the strategy and feel of a traditional puzzle game with the precision and reflexes required in a shooter. As each stage begins, various colored cubes form into one large object called a Cubello, which floats and rotates as you play. Launch additional cubes from your magazine and try to connect four or more of the same color, removing them from the Cubello and eventually leaving only its core. Take on the challenge of either Stage or Endless mode and watch what happens when Bonus Time is activated. The straightforward controls and goal ensure that anyone can play, while offering enough depth that even advanced players will find themselves quickly addicted to the unique world of Art Style: CUBELLO.
Reading it again it sounds like the cloest we'll get to Tetrisphere for a while...

America got his second Art Style game and Europe did not even get the first one =(.

And another sad thing here in Europe: We will get 'World of Goo' not before February 2009 and have to pay 40€ (~55$) for it, because it won't be released on WiiWare. Hopefully there will be enough extras to justify the much higher price.

But beside this, the WiiWare and Virtual Console updates are really great, especially 'World of Goo' and 'Secret of Mana'^^.

As was said in Friday's topic, there is nothing stopping people getting the PC version of World of goo through steam or 2DBoy's website.

Unless co-op is the be all and end all in which case you'll have to look at different methods of getting the WiiWare version or just wait it out :P

For people unsure about the $15 price tag for World of Goo:

World of Goo is well worth $15 because it's one of the most unique and fresh games I've seen in quite a while. The fact that it's made by two guys aside; this game looks fantastic, even stacks up to some $50 retail Wii games. It looks like an amazing experience unlike anything on WiiWare, and for that alone it's worth the money. People complain that WiiWare is full of crap, but then when amazing stuff like this comes out they don't like it because it's "5 dollars too much"? Come on. Don't buy a crappy falling blocks game on WiiWare for $10, and some NES game for $5. Get World of Goo instead, I can assure you that, unless you absolutely despise puzzle games, you won't be disappointed.

I'm not buying it right now because, like I said, I don't have the money. If I did I'd be already downloading it.

WHERE IS MABOSHI IN THE US?!?!?

Its all part the plan. Being that MaBoShi comes from Nintendo and being that the Art Style games come from Nintendo and being that the Art Style games are already taking up TWO of the Four weeks in October, Nintendo doesnt want to be a WiiWare hog, or something like that.

Id expect MaBoShi in November if they havent announced anymore Art Style games.

World of Goo is amazing and I highly recommend it, although it gets hard fast.

This'll probably get deleted but...
Anyone ever downloaded a game after using AnyRegion Changer? I want to do this for world of goo in Europe but need to know if it will not brick my wii and what the process is.
Downloading is the easy part and should work without a hitch. Running is the hard part. You'll need firmware 3.2 (but since you're using AnyReiogn Changer you have that). Get channels to be region free (either using starfall for a pernament patch or Menu loader for a temporary solution*). Hope that works.

If it doesn't there are two options:
-Make the Wii a US Wii using AnyRegion changer
-Dump the internal memory hack the app then reinstal it

For personal reasons I'm not going to do anything until Thursday but I hope that helps.

*-Temporary as in lost after power-down.

Avatar

63. wesleyh Belgium 13 Oct 2008, 18:50 GMT

Oh I'm not doing anything until someone else has done it first :) Is what you are saying all theoretical or did someone already do this? And, if you have that capability, it would be nice if you could videotape all the steps as I'm sure it would be helpful to alot of people.

One thing that does scare me though is that it's pretty easy for nintendo to see that you have games from multiple regions.. (with a simple db query) - Then again, nintendo are the last to act fast on something..

Avatar

64. wesleyh Belgium 13 Oct 2008, 18:53 GMT

Also, what happens with the download history? Will my european history get erased? Will I have a combined history or two separate histories per region? I obviously don't want to loose the rights to my already downloaded games.

Avatar

65. Mickeymac United States 13 Oct 2008, 18:57 GMT

Wait, whoa! World of Goo is out already?! Dang it, I'm out of points! Gah, and that Cubello looks pretty sweet, too. As soon as I get points both these games are mine!

Avatar

66. Starwolf_UK United Kingdom 13 Oct 2008, 19:03 GMT

My set up was the following. Firmware 3.2.

I downloaded the Fujifilm channel. Without starfall it appears on the Wii menu but running it comes up with "this channel cannot be used".
I then patched for region free channles using Starfall (or you could just run the menuloader app). The channel booted.

Now had it been Star Soldier R (don't ask why you'ld want a Japanese or American Star Soldier R) the game won't work for some reason (Hudson games, Family Table Tennis and a few Japan only games only work on the regions they should).

As for games from multiple regions. As far as I know when you send a Wii for repair they use thier diagnostic disc to get your Wii sohp account data. This is then transfered to a brand new Wii. The worst that would come from an inspection is the repair fee being "misuse/abuse" (the more expensive one) regardless of if you have a warrnety (using homebrew voids it).

Download history shows everything (the Fujifilm channel comes up in its Japanese name) but channels you have download only show channels from that region (so in Japan only the Fujifilm one shows up while in Europe everything but Fujifilm shows up)

67. Pegasus United States 13 Oct 2008, 19:06 GMT

Cubello sure is a bit different. If the Art Style series is going to continue like this I'm definitely looking forward to more. Simple, challenging, addictive, fun.

What's Cubello about? Think of a swirling mass of differently colored cubes from which you have to rid all cubes from the core. You have to connect at least four cubes to get rid of them, by adding more cubes to the bulk. You only have a limited supply of cubes to add, which will only be resupplied by clearing cubes from the mass.

One of the challenges lies in the fact that you only have indirect control over the mass's rotation. Whereever you shoot a cube that's where the mass will turn. At the same time, you can't wait forever because the longer you wait before your next shot the closer the swirling mass moves towards you. If it gets close enough it's game over. The other way you can fail is by running out of cubes to shoot.

There are bonus times, which are more or less triggered randomly, but you do have a way to increase your chance. When you clear four cubes a "slot machine" will go off in the upper right corner, and when all four symbols match you go into bonus time; clear more than four cubes and an additional slot appears - you still only have to match four. Once you go into bonus time you get unlimited ammo for a specified color for a limited time.

There are no real high scores, but it does keep track of how many turns and how much time it took you to complete a stage.

Highly recommendable to puzzle fans.

Oh, and World of Goo is terrific! The hype was justified.

68. wesleyh Belgium 13 Oct 2008, 19:11 GMT

For now, yes. I say for now since going to/from Australia and New Zealand wipes your Wii point balance. It is unlikely Nintendo will impliment for other countries but there is a possibility.

Btw, I downloaded anyregion changer and starfall and they only have a .dol inside. No .elf, is that not needed for the homebrew channel to work?
Homebrew channel can boot dol files.

And which settings do you change exactly in anyregion changer? All of them to US?
To access the Wii shop you only need to change the country (the one that is numbers). So for you that should be from 78 to 49. That is the only option you should touch.

And Corbie, you should totally change your name to Buford. :)

Two really great releases. World of Goo is up to its hype and Cubello is so much fun...

Wow, World of Goo is epic.
If the developers read this, you guys did an AMAZING job.
This has to be one of the best games I've ever played. If every WiiWare game was half as good as this one, the service would be a LOT better than it already is.

If this game scores anything less than a 10, I'll be surprised.
I've read WWW's scoring policy, and I think this game is as close to perfection as a WiiWare game could possibly get.

Woot! I can't afford world of goo yet =/.. I might even have to wait for Christmas for a game like that when I'm flooded with 3-4 wii points cards.. But Cubello looks amazing too, and pretty cheap =D.. I'll have to pick it up sometime.. also.. is it bad that I've never heard of Secret of Mana before? (I wasn't much of a video gamer when I was younger.. only played the N64 when it came out..)

Secret of Mana is still one of the greatest action-rpgs ever made. If you haven't experienced it yet, get it when you can.

@AlexSays
Dang.. you make me want to buy this game really soon.. >_>
I'm going to have to fork up some money though.. And I'm running low >_<.. To many games are coming out! and Christmas is so far away!!

EDIT:
@Corbie
I'll have to give it a try sometime. I'll add it to a list of games I still need to download sometime

The only thing that isn't perfect about this game is that it's unclear if there will be downloadable content packs and how that will work.

Forget the content packs...bring on the sequel! :)

The Japanese today got:

  • Darts Wii (500 Wii Points) - Not bad price if you want a virtual dart game.
  • Tetris Party (1200 Points) - Those lucky guys. Hopefully it will get released in the US/EU soon.
  • Some Wii game that uses Mii's and looks like a Brain Training game.

World of Goo looks promising but I'll save my Wii points for now.

@RadioShadow: Tetris Party?? I'm in severe envy mode right now. First, they get Alien Crush, then you guys get WoG, then this?!?!? I think I'm about to cry...

RE: Name changing: Just so you know guys (Corbie), I've always considered my name (WiiloveitOnline) to be a bit too long. Did anyone take Wiiloveit before me in the first place (hint hint hint hint)?

Hey all- I'm a Wii owner in Ireland and I followed the instructions on the neogaf thread mentioned above, in order to download World of Goo. It all works, and it's a brilliant game :)
However- I also downloaded secret of mana, it being one of my favourite games of all time- but it doesn't work. It just boots to a black screen, no sound, and the wii remote unsyncs. Anyone have an idea what the problem is, and how to resolve it?

Avatar

105. wesleyh Belgium 14 Oct 2008, 19:26 GMT

It's quite possible that you wasted money on that one as there are certain games where the trick region free trick just doesn't work. I don't know for certain if that is the cause though.

mcullinane

106. mcullinane Ireland 14 Oct 2008, 19:29 GMT

Yeah, it could well be wasted alright. I can live with losing 8 euro I suppose. :( Just wondering if there's something else I can enable in AnyRegion or Starfall that could help. Or maybe it's only most wiiware that can be played using these hacks, rather than VC games. Don't know enough about it to be certain.

Yeah we really need a list of games that don't work, i added your game to the thread at neogaf.

@mcullinane: All US/JP SNES Channels run in NTSC. Now unless your Wii is set to run in NTSC mode (it can be changed using AnyRegion changer), it won't display (even if your TV supports NTSC).

This can be fixed by dumping the Channel, change the TV settings in the Channel to run in PAL60, and that will solve the problem. If you need more information, send me a e-mail to: commandershadow@hotmail.co.uk

RadioShadow, then why does world of goo work just fine? mcullinane, please let me know if you get it to work this way. Hopefully.

110. Starwolf_UK United Kingdom 14 Oct 2008, 22:03 GMT

@mcullinane. Do you have the video settings set to 60Hz? That is all I can think of. I can imagine the executable being 60Hz or don't boot since the emulator won't work...

I can understand PAL60 not working on NTSC machines (PAL60 is similar to NTSC but still using PAL colours), but NTSC does work...

At least my import Wii games play in Red only through my RGB cable* because they output in NTSC rather than PAL60. You see NTSC signal treats the RGB cable as an S-video cable...and the RGB cable isn't fully wired, the PINout for Red thankfully is the same for both S-video and RGB...the solution for full colour is an S-video or composite cable...
*-UInless they support being forced to boot in PAL60.

111. mcullinane Ireland 14 Oct 2008, 22:29 GMT

I'm gonna get in touch with Radioshadow to see if his solution works. But it's definetly not an issue with the game just failing to display on my screen (I'm using component cables). Also tried RGB+composite. The fact that there's no sound and the remote unsyncs itself means that the game is failing to boot at all, which leads me to believe that Radio is on the right track. Well i'll let you know how I get on! Cheers again guys. :)

@Starwolf_UK: It doesn't matter if your Wii is set to 60Hz or 50Hz, when you boot a SNES Channel, it forces the Wii to use the TV Settings inside the channel.

By default, US/JP SNES Channels are set to run in NTSC mode. A PAL Wii is set to run games in PAL. Loading a US/JP SNES Wad will just tell the Wii to load in NTSC and because the PAL Wii is set to run in PAL, it won't display anything (even if your TV supports NTSC).

If you set your PAL Wii to NTSC using AnyRegionChanger, the SNES Channel will load correctly (providing your TV has NTSC support).

@wesleyh: A lot of Wii/WiiWare games contains the necessary TV settings to run in NTSC, PAL60 or PAL50, depending on your Wii's settings.

The Wii instead of being forced to use a TV setting like the SNES Channels, uses the necessary ones. World of Goo basically has been set to work in NTSC and PAL Mode.

113. mcullinane Ireland 15 Oct 2008, 00:30 GMT

@RadioShadow: I'd rather not have to set my PAL Wii to NTSC mode every time i want to run the SNES channel- tbh I'm worried about bricking the wii- would changing this specific channel's tv setting to pal60 be a relatively easy process?

Avatar

You have to dump the Wiis memory, edit that application and then re-instal it. The first step is time consuming (takes about an hour), the rest are easy if you have the right know-how. The problem is the instal file can be used on any Wii which is why i'm not going to say more than that here.

Personally, you've bought the thing you've got the moral high ground. You're clearly using thwe homebrew channel just get an emulator and ROM. A bit of a let down in the end but feel happy you bought it and thats what matters.

What's all this mumbo-jumbo talk of AnyRegion changer? Is it legal?

Avatar

116. Starwolf_UK United Kingdom 15 Oct 2008, 13:14 GMT

@PALgamer. Its homebrew meaning it is unsigned code meaning it'll void your warrenty.

It allows you to make parts of or the entrie Wii into any other region. For instance we were changing which Wii shop to connect to. We are still buying the goods with Wii Points so I don't see any legal problems there only stupid bureaucratic "bu..bu.but its not PEGI rated".

Of course to use the bought goods we need to patch the Wii menu so they will run or if that doesn't work (like it seems for VC games :( ) change the region completely or hack the app.

Cubello is awesome! I definitely recommend it if you're into puzzlers. The controls are simple but the game can get very challenging. It's a lot of fun!
