What do you get when you cross the original Super Mario Bros. game with some extremely over-the-top risque humor? You basically get Sega's upcoming Japanese WiiWare title Pole's Big Adventure. Yes, you read that correctly. The character's name is Pole. And if you're dirty mind immediately thought of a certain male appendage, you're on the right track.
Pole's Big Adventure looks to be a very standard NES-like (or dare we say Master System?) platformer title on the outside, but if you look deeper you'll find a game that will basically push the envelope for crude humor and just from looking at early screenshots of the game in action, it seems like the game will obviously poke some fun at our friendly neighborhood plumber Mario. As if to not be too obvious, the official Japanese web site even features a large mushroom on it, although the word mushroom is also a Japanese slang term for the aforementioned male appendage, so we'll leave further speculation to you readers on this one.
The game is set to hit the Japanese WiiWare service on February 3rd and has already received a "B" rating from CERO, so this odd humor should be interesting to see. While we'd love to see the game released outside of Japan just to be able to experience this game's unique brand of humor, there's been no official announcement of the game being released on the North American or European WiiWare services at the current time.
We'll keep you posted on any future developments regarding Pole's Big Adventure. Until then you can take a look at a couple of screenshots of the game in action from Japanese Famitsu magazine.
Update: You can now find out lots more about this game on the official Pole's Big Adventure website. For only 500 Wii points this is looking pretty good. Let's hope it gets a release outside Japan!

@slambert215: So it seems. I'm sorry I asked, as it was quite easy to look up on Wikipedia anyway. doh!
It's funny. I would have thought this game would get a "D" or MAYBE a "C" given what little I know about it thus far. Then again, I suppose the Japanese do tend to be lenient.
I also find it funny that their rating system works in the way it does. Makes me think of school grades, which would make more mature games fail.

@dfalco: You mean "crap?" That's not even really a bad word anymore. Heck, my PASTOR has said it from the pulpit!
Reading further into the article on CERO, I found it odd to see that some M-rated games in America got a "Z" in Japan, including Assassin's Creed and Dead Rising. Then they've got this weird gem:
"For example, the game Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne was rated A by the CERO, but rated 12+ by the PEGI and M by the ESRB."
That's a heck of a difference! Why don't we just have one world-wide rating system, anyway? Wouldn't that be easier?

Actually, I already realized why we DO need separate rating systems. The Wikipedia article I quoted said why, but I didn't understand what it meant until I'd thought about it a bit. Basically, cultural differences make it more or less impossible to have a game rated only once. That one game got an E or E10+ equivalent in Japan because of their values, and an M in America because of ours. So what would we do if there was just one rating system, split the difference and call it a T? If we did, we might wind up with nothing BUT T-rated games. Dumb.
As far as this game in America is concerned, I HIGHLY doubt it'll be released. If it is, it'll be at LEAST a T. And I won't play it, because I try to limit needless innuendo in my life.
31. Ferret75
22 Jan 2009, 23:30 GMT

Hnn... I should have thought of this earlier, but Sega and Nintendo were rivals who once mocked each other (that King Boom ghost in Sonic Adventure 2 was a parody of Nintendo's King Boo, while there were blue hedgehogs in a Yoshi Game), so I see the sense of Sega parodying Nintendo today.
That means... Nintendo might parody Sonic! (...not vulgarly, though, since they want the consumers to forget about Conker due to his "bad turn," so to speak.)
By the way, the site came on. Since I was lyping this while listening to the music of the site, I noticed something: if you keep hearing the song that plays at the main screen of the site (the one that has two moosemen attacking a cowboy), you hear a "de de de de de..." voice. If you keep waiting, you hear a "ga gou gou [...] pe pe [...] ay. Yay!" (To be safe, please do not click on anything else when you are on that screen, since I do not know what happens at the time I am writting this.)

@Adamant. Usually, when a game is rated M for dirty humor, there's other factors that contribute to it, like strong language or nudity. Games with just straight dirty humor usually get a T or E10 rating.
@Corbie. I thought the halibut joke was pretty good....

Just checked the (now updated) 'site - and from what I can make out, it looks pretty good, with one of my favourite things about it being the return of the old "SEGA" sound. The text on there also mentions something about the PS2 and 360, but goodness knows what it means since there is a lack of these logos on any of the other stuff that has the WiiWare logo on.
@Ricardo: No motion controls, but it is GCController / CC compatible, with standard D-Pad; A; 1; 2 affair.
Oh and also - this only costs 500 Wii Points, so this is a bit of a must buy... if you're Japanese

Nope. You'll need to clear up some space on your Wii. Delete any save game files from games you don't play anymore, and remove the channels you don't use, or some VC/WiiWare games you don't want right now. (You can redownload them for free from the shop channel, so don't worry about that!)
You can only download to the Wii console itself at this point, and you'll need all of those blocks to be in one place.

Still won't buy this even though it is a platformer. Can I have at least 16-bit, please? Why is every dev avoiding the 16-bit generation on WiiWare? Or how about Neo Geo quality graphics? Despite size limitations, it would be totally worth it to me. Why must my love of all things 2D be crushed by devs who want 8-bit or Atari level graphics?
