Looks a bit like Loco Roco to us!

Looks a bit like Loco Roco to us!

A recently released lineup of forthcoming games for Nintendo systems has thrown up a brand new WiiWare release called Night Game. Produced by the same team behind the upcoming Cave Story WiiWare port, this title is apparently ‘part action, part puzzler’.

Here’s the press release:

Night Game, developed and published by Nicalis: Exclusively for WiiWare, Night Game (working title) is part action game and part puzzler. It invites players into a beautifully atmospheric world, where they must use real physics to maneuver a mysterious, glowing sphere through vastly different locales. Night Game pushes the boundaries of design with its unique art style, and professionally produced music score. This title is a 2009 Independent Games Festival Seumas McNally Award nominee and from the same developers responsible for Cave Story on Wii.

Sounds pretty interesting to us, and it’s encouraging to see Nintendo singling out titles like this. The company clearly has high expectations of this particular WiiWare release – let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint!

If the same press release, Nintendo also mentioned the following WiiWare releases:

BIT.TRIP BEAT, developed by Gaijin Games and published by Aksys Games: BIT.TRIP BEAT is what you get when you mix classic video gaming with modern gaming sensibilities. What may seem like a simple “paddle” game turns into a psychedelic trip down memory lane which has you hitting “beats” in rhythm to Chiptune style music. While the game can be difficult, if you crank up the tunes and get in the zone, you’ll have a great time. Performing perfectly isn’t required to experience all the game’s content, but the extra challenge will keep score-hunters coming back in search of each level’s elusive “PERFECT” score.

Eduardo the Samurai Toaster, developed and published by Semnat Studios LLC: Fight your way through 13 diverse locations on your own or with up to three friends in this frenetic and stylish side-scrolling action game. Play as Eduardo and his fellow toaster buddies as you fire an assortment of pastries at all kinds of dastardly food products. Hop onto laser-mounted scooters and fly across the screen in rocket packs, and learn to cooperate with your teammates or simply annoy each other in an awesomely fun way by throwing each other around the screen. The choice is up to you.

Swords & Soldiers, developed and published by Ronimo Games: Swords & Soldiers is a side-scrolling real-time strategy game, in which three distinct factions battle for the powers of the gods. The goal is to destroy the enemies’ castle on the other end of the level, while protecting your own. This can be done by training powerful units or casting devastating spells. The game will feature a single-player campaign and a competitive split-screen multiplayer mode as well as several other game modes.

Again, the company clearly has high hopes about these games, so keep them on your radar!

So, the guy behind the original Cave Story has nothing to do with this new game?

No Night Game isn't developed by Pixel, it just happens to also be published by Nicalis.

Simple as it is, I love that screen shot.

But I have to say it again since it's mentioned in the press release: Hurry up Bit Trip! I WANT YOU.

Wow, I've been waiting for that announcement awhile now. This is going to be an amazing asset to Wiiware, this developer is awesome. :D

Cool. It was more or less already announced, but now that it is confirmed I'm happy.

It seems Nintendo is beginning to take WiiWare seriously. More announcements and better advertising should help them gathering more indie original games and less mediocre (and flat-out bad) games.

Presumably, those games will be released sooner rather than later since it was Nintendo that announced them (and they'd never mention WiiWare games too far ahead - usually), but Bit.Trip was PEGI rated the other day, so we could get it tonight!

@Wiiguy. I always thought WoG looked like LocoRoco too.

Despite loving LocoRoco, and being made by the same guys responsible for the Wiiware version of CS, I'm reluctantly gonna pass on this. There's just too many Wiiware games I'm looking forward to already, and I don't know where to fit this one in!

The three games listed bewlo this one all seem like ones worth downloading. Not much known on this Night Game, but at least its not from NIGHTS! That series is awful (IMO.)

I'm very excited for Night Game!! For people following indie devs and particularly Nifflas (Knytt and Knytt Stories) this is great news because this is his next game.

GoNintendo has posted the first trailer for this game. It's in his "end of day thoughts". The trailer is short but wonderful! : )

This is exactly what I want to see on WiiWare,..all my favorite small time devs getting a console release.

Popyman, even though I'm glad you'll get the game, I disagree with you that its a clone of LocoRoco. If if you had to tilt the world to the left and right to the move ball, then it would be.

In fact, Night Game is a spiritual successor to a freeware game called Within a Deep Forest created by a developer known as Nifflas. In it, you play as some type of creature that is a blue ball, like in Night. And again you use physics to bounce and control his height. Download the game to get a feeling of how it should play.

My favorite game of the developer is Knytt Stories, which is basically a hybrid of Mario and Metroid (Mario's platforming with Metroid's formula of exploration and learning new abilities). Knytt Stories is a sequel to Knytt, which was pretty much the same except Stories is a compilation of different levels with a Level Editor. That would also make a great addition to WiiWare, where you could make and share your own levels and every once in a while buy downloadable level packs, as well as new graphics, sound and music to use in the editor.

This isn't exactly brand new. There was a teaser for this before the PR came around....

@Popyman

I don't blame Bulbasaur; way too many puzzle games are over saturating the WiiWare service.

Night Game is from the same wonderful man who brought us Within a Deep Forest, Knytt and Knytt Stories. Yeah, it's going to be awesome. Can't wait to see it and the Cave Story port on WiiWare later this year!
