Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (4th Mar)

Posted Wed, 04 Mar 2009 by Corbie Dillard

Could Onslaught be the next #1?

Could Onslaught be the next #1?

It's Wednesday again which can only mean one thing. It's time to take a look at the most popular WiiWare titles available in the Wii Shop. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take a look for yourself by simply logging on to your Wii Shop channel, heading into the WiiWare section and then viewing "Popular Games". It's that simple! Trust us, if we can do it, anyone can.

We compile this list using the USA region Wii Shop channel, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be quite a bit different. Please feel free to post your region's findings below as always.

Keep in mind that the list below is a measure of actual sales made recently, not of the total time the game has been available for sale.

Here is the list for the 4th of March:

1 (1) - Tetris Party
2 (2) - My Aquarium
3 (17) - Onslaught
4 (3) - World of Goo
5 (4) - Cue Sports - Pool Revolution
6 (5) - Dr Mario Online Rx
7 (6) - My Pokémon Ranch
8 (9) - Midnight Bowling
9 (8) - Fun! Fun! Minigolf
10 (7) - Brain Challenge
11 (10) - Target Toss Pro: Bags
12 (15) - TV Show King
13 (14) - Defend your Castle
14 (12) - Sandy Beach
15 (15) - Wild West Guns
16 (13) - Snowboard Riot
17 (--) - Mega Man 9
18 (18) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
19 (19) - Tiki Towers
20 (11) - LIT

* (N) - Denotes a new entry on the Top 20

It would seem that the "Big Three" are no more, as Hudson's Onslaught title has managed to knock World of Goo down a spot to #4. While the wild ride couldn't go on forever, I'm not sure anyone expected Onslaught to be the game to finally break the popular WiiWare group up.

There was another nice surprise this week as Mega Man 9 once again popped up on the charts at #17 after falling off last week for the first time since its initial release. You just can't keep a good blue bomber down when it comes right down to it. Of course the return of Mega Man 9 also sparked the end of Bomberman Blast on the chart, as it dropped off completely this week.

This week's big climber was easily Hudson's Onslaught which jumped from #17 all the way up to #3. The biggest dropper was Wayforward's LIT, which dropped nine spots down to the last spot on the Top 20. Could this be a quick end to LIT's run on the Top 20?

There was quite a bit of movement on the chart this week, which included one resurgent title in TV Show King, which jumped up 3 spots after beginning its descent down the Top 20. But the big news this week has to be the record jump of Onslaught and its ability to finally knock World of Goo out of the Top 3. Who knows what next week will hold, but it should be fun to find out.

I'm wondering how many people will be fooled by the picture on the news article, but I had to put an Onslaught picture up given it's amazing jump on this week's chart. I just had to do it! :D

I had a feeling Onslaught would grab a good spot. I'm actually surprised it didn't go higher!

BTW, did anyone else hear about A Boy and His Blob? Looks gorgeous, but I can't help but think it should be released for WiiWare.

Rum Rapture

6. Rum Rapture United Kingdom 04 Mar 2009, 21:59 GMT

The lovely charts of the UK:

1 (1) - Onslaught
2 (3) - My Aquarium
3 (2) - Pop-Up Pirate!
4 (4) - World of Goo
5 (N) - Snowboard Riot
6 (5) - My Pokemon Ranch
7 (8) - Bomberman Blast
8 (7) - The Incredible Maze

17 (15) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King
18 (16) - Space Invaders Get Even
19 (17) - LostWinds
20 (19) - Sudoku Challenge!

Juicy summary: Snowboard Riot debuts at #5; My Aquarium and Bomberman Blast both climb up a place, and Wild West Guns inexplicably manages to claw up 2 spots. Onslaught, World of Goo and Tetris Party remain at #1, #4 and #13 respectively, but every other game is shunted down a bit. Harsh world we live in, eh...

KDR_11k

7. KDR_11k Germany 04 Mar 2009, 22:03 GMT

Germany again:

(1) 1 Onslaught
(2) 2 World of Goo
(4) 3 My Aquarium
(3) 4 FUN FUN Minigolf
(6) 5 TV Show King
(5) 6 Pop-Up Pirate!

(8) 8 Tetris Party
(9) 9 Bomberman Blast
(-) 10 Snowboard Riot
(10) 11 SAMEGAME
(11) 12 Midnight Bowling

(15) 15 Lost Winds
(14) 16 Family Glide Hockey
(20) 17 Mega Man 9
(17) 18 The Incredible Maze
(19) 19 Defend Your Castle
(-) 20 Art Style: Orbient

Two new entries mean two new losers, this time it's Sudoku Challenge (former 16) and Wild West Guns (former 18). Snowboard Riot is off to a good start, MM9 is climbing again and Beer Pong didn't enter at all.

9. Neomega United States 04 Mar 2009, 22:10 GMT

Diggety damn you Corbie!
I seriously though Onslaught was #1! But hey there's always next week! Now that Onslaught is in the top 3 all we got do is knock out Tetris party and its catchy themes!
And shouldn't everyone have My Aquarium by now?

I wonder if there is a sequel in progress for My Aquarium?

Scryble

10. Scryble Canada 04 Mar 2009, 22:41 GMT

Looks like Onslaught is a run-away success. Maybe this will give incentive to Hudson to release some DLC missions/modes. :)

Wow, Europe loves its Onslaught! Sweden's list especially is one to be proud of! Lets here it for Hudson's success, and the Return of the Blue Bomber on the U.S. chart!

Objection_Blaster

13. Objection_Blaster United States 04 Mar 2009, 23:01 GMT

Very nice, Onslaught. You may be frustrating as hell, but you're still a quality, fun game and you deserve your place. Poor WoG, though...

Ricardo91

14. Ricardo91 United States 04 Mar 2009, 23:06 GMT

Boy, Europe sure likes shooting giant alien bugs! :D

I'm quite impressed at how well Onslaught is doing here too! Though it kinda makes sense giving America's fetish for FPSs. And it's ABOUT FRIGGIN' TIME something knocked WoG off the top 3, not that I have anything against it.

Top 20 Japan 3/2 (compared with 2/23 numbers)
Courtesy: iNSIDE http://www.inside-games.jp/news/339/33942.html

1 (1) Chindouchou!! Pole no Daibouken (Pole's Big Adventure)
2 (2) My Pokemon Ranch
3 (N) Mr. Driller W
4 (3) Bomberman Blast
5 (7) Okiraku Sugoroku (Family Pirate Party)
6 (6) Minna no Theather
7 (5) Okiraku Slot Kart Racing (Family Slot Kart Racing)
8 (8) Megaman 9
9 (9) Pop-Up! Pirate
10 (10) 1 Nuku! Dasshutsu Game: My Home Hen
11 (11) FFCC: My Life as a King
12 (N) FUN! FUN! Minigolf
13 (12) Tetris Party
14 (4) Bubble Bobble Wii
15 (16) My Aquarium
16 (13) Kotoba no Puzzle: Mojipittan Wii
17 (N) Crystal Defenders R2
18 (20) Tataite! Mogupon (Whack A Mole)
19 (19) Dr. Mario
20 (15) Simple Series Vol. 3: The Mahjong

Pole's Big Adventure continue in Nº1and i don't think that will change.
A lot of new games, I think Japam doesn't like "Defender" games, Cristal Defenders R2 placed in the same place as R1
Fun Fun Minigolf ranked in its second week.
Lost Winds, Crystal Defenders R2, Board Warriors fall off the charts.

Onslaught a success in America, predictable, in Europe, a surprise!, it's good for more variety in games I don't like FPS, but I feel happy that games like this sells.
In the other extreme of the chart, please Lit, don't fall more!

"Someone should combine Tetris, fish, and shooting things. It'd never leave number one."

Big Kahuna Party has blocks, fish and blowing things up, is that close enough?

(and yes, seriously, it IS a good game. Not terribly original, but very fun)

KDR_11k

32. KDR_11k Germany 05 Mar 2009, 09:20 GMT

Someone should combine Tetris, fish, and shooting things. It'd never leave number one.

That'd be like shooting a fish in a barrel (made of tetrads).

Bland_Boy

33. Bland_Boy Australia 05 Mar 2009, 10:47 GMT

Swedes have the best taste in WiiWare games so-far I see...
How can Tetris Party be top of the charts?
So many bad games topping the lists.
Why don't people research just a little before buying WiiWare.

World Of Goo IMO should be #1 every week if quality was a prerequisite for sales on the WiiWare service.

KDR_11k

Finally got some points to catch up a little on a free day, and thought I'd get Tetris and Onslaught. Started up Tetris and spent ALL DAY playing, then couldn't pull my girlfriend off it either. It really deserves it's reign, even the new modes are great. As for onslaught I'll still get it today. This site has saved all my purchases, thanks WWW! no more embarrasing Critter Roundup mistakes. Oops, did I just say that? Um, just kidding.

There was quite a bit of movement on the chart this week, which included two slightly resurgent titles in Brain Challenge and TV Show King, both of which jumped up 3 spots after beginning their descent down the Top 20.

You lie! Brain Challenge dropped three spots. I suppose I'll let you off since you must have just been so amazed by it's previous position of number seven ;)

Corbie

44. Corbie United States 05 Mar 2009, 18:20 GMT

I actually confused it with another game and then when I wrote it up I saw that it had a 3-spot difference and included it. Sadly it fell instead of climbed. Good catch! :)
