Spooky stuff!

Spooky stuff!

European gamers can finally breathe a sigh of relief as WayForward's LIT is on its way to the European WiiWare service.

Although we've already seen hints here and there regarding LIT_'s eventual European WiiWare release, the guys at WayForward decided to make it official today with their announcement that LIT is indeed coming to the European WiiWare service. If you don't believe us, you can check out the official press release below.

Valencia, Calif. – April 8, 2009 – After leading North American gamers through the darkness, WayForward Technologies today announced that their critically acclaimed inaugural WiiWare title, LIT, will be released in PAL territories early this summer.

Released in North America in February 2009, LIT has earned a cult following due in large part to its unique horror/puzzle gameplay and grotesquely alluring art style. Offering 30 challenging puzzle rooms, 5 boss battles, multiple endings, an unlockable second character, and a fiercely challenging Dark Mode, LIT provides tremendous value to gamers looking for a uniquely dark experience on Nintendo’s WiiWare platform.

“We are really excited to see this title distributed in PAL territories,” says WayForward CEO John Beck. “We think that the game appeals to a truly diverse audience, and are excited to see that apply across the globe.”

"The critical and fan response to LIT in North America has been overwhelmingly positive, it's really been amazing,” says LIT director Adam Tierney. “Gamers have seemed to form a real connection to the title, which was important to us as this was a very personal project for WayForward. We are excited and proud now to be able to offer the game to our European fans. Thanks for waiting, and enjoy your emo."

LIT does not yet have a price point for its PAL release. The game will include all of the features of the North American release in addition to an enhanced and improved control scheme.

About LIT

LIT is a 3D horror puzzler set in a dark high school overrun by creatures. The game follows Jake, a below-average student and the game's protagonist, as he makes his way through each classroom, utilizing what light he can find to create safe paths across the darkness. Jake's objectives are to escape his school and reconnect with his girlfriend, Rachael, who uses the school’s phones to keep in contact with him. LIT combines environmental puzzling with horror combat and boss battles to create a uniquely unsettling Nintendo Wii experience.

I wonder if the "enhanced and improved control scheme" will be patched in for the NA release.

Would it be overly cynical of me to suggest that perhaps the 'enhanced and improved control scheme' may result in the price being bumped up by a couple of hundred of points to 'cover costs'?

I honestly hope so. I don't want the Wii Shop "patches" (it is "patches" as it redownloading the entiure thing again) to end up only being used for added slowdown in Starfox 64 as fans were complaing about boss death sequences being too fast and updates to a bunch of ultility channels (Photo, Wii Speak, Nintendo).

Early this summer? Oh, poo. When I saw that they'd put out a press release, the first thing I thought of was that the game might be released in Europe tomorrow. Ah well...

Not only LIT is making the future release to Europe, but Nintendo UK has added the following WiiWare games to be Coming Soon, in which some are already mentioned on this web site earlier this week:
Robocalypse - Beaver Defense, ColorZ, Water Warefare, Squibs Arcade, Overturn: Mecha Wars, Spaceball Revolution, Icarian: Kindred Spiritis as well as the Swords & Solders, Cave Story and Crystal Defenders R1 already confirmed earlier.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. To clarify, the changes in the EUR version will include:

  • Removal of 'the all-powerful A Button'. Now A Button controls items in Jake's hand, and C Button affects objects in the room. No more accidental lamp deaths.
  • When sweeping with the flashlight for clues, objects in the darkness stay lit slightly longer.
  • Rachael's phone calls (and Jake's) will be subtitled onscreen in each different European language.

"Would it be overly cynical of me to suggest that perhaps the 'enhanced and improved control scheme' may result in the price being bumped up by a couple of hundred of points to 'cover costs'?"

That wouldn't be a factor, these were easy adjustments. We don't know what the EUR price will be yet, but expect it to be comparable to the US price (or whatever is the $8-ish price in Europe).
