Wow, that was unexpected.
If you've kept your ear to the ground you'll know that Capcom has recently announced that Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network. This is very much a BIG DEAL because the game is a 2D masterpiece.
Sadly, the Wii is getting the cold shoulder. Capcom won't be bringing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 to Nintendo's console and Christian Svensson - Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development at Capcom - has added that the size of the game is totally unsuitable for the WiiWare release that many had hoped and prayed for:
This is a downloadable play, not a retail play. We don’t actually have any retail rights on this project. And there’s no way to get anywhere near the Wiiware filesize limit here.
So there you have it. No Cyclops vs.Ryu action for you, Nintendo Wii!

It makes perfect sense to keep this title on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. A bit too ambitious for WiiWare, I'm afraid.

It's a shame, one would think that with 32GB SDHC cards now supported we would see a bit more releases like this. Guess i'll have to settle for VC fighters
6. LinktotheFuture
28 Apr 2009, 22:57 BST
Too bad they couldn't release a VC Arcade version of this, it is possibly the best fighting game ever.
7. warioswoods
28 Apr 2009, 23:06 BST
@Firkraag
Even with SDHC support, the Wii sadly will not be able to raise the downloadable file sizes at all, since the SD support is really just a trick -- the system quickly copies the entire game from your SD card to the internal storage before play, so it's just a faster way of doing what we could always do; it will have zero impact on the existing limitations.
More to the point, however: this is an arcade game released in 2000. That's way past the kind of games you'll see on the VC, and we'll be lucky if we ever even see games from the mid 90's. That was never the intention for the VC Arcade; during the original announcement, it was quite clear that this new VC section was meant only for retro early-arcade gaming.
There's still no reason, however, that they couldn't at least bring the first MvC game to WiiWare as a port; looking at the ROM data, it would appear to be quite small in size, and they could surely put together an efficient emulator with some effort.

Ahhhh if my dreamcast still worked I would bust this one out again. Great fun, a really challenging game also. I'll probably end up downloading this for my xbox, just for memory's sake.
Also, speaking of dreamcast, what a great and underrated console!! :[

considering how many street fighter games there are, and consider the fact that street fighter 4 just came out, and that equals out to, i really could care less. the psn version will probally be online also so id buy it there anyways. capcom should make it up to wiiware by releasing a new side scrolling beat em up'.

Well we were talking a while ago about the fact the Wii couldn't handle downloadable Dreamcast games. So, it's really not possible, and technically, really can't happen. The arcade version was released on NAOMI hardware, which was basically a Dreamcast but with more RAM, so even that would be hard to squeeze.

Taking into consideration what Firkraag and warioswoods have said... how soon until Nintendo doubles the Wiiware size limit? The SDHC card storage solution means the system copies the game from the SD or SDHC card into the system memory... meaning that IF we know that and IF we mantain 800 blocks free in the system memory (I currently have 1040 blocks free even with the Wii Fit channel instaled in system memory), Wiiware games could increase to a 50 or 60 MB limit, at least.
Hopefully news of this will come at E3 in a few weeks time.
28. vherub
29 Apr 2009, 03:28 BST
I'd say lifting size limits is a great idea, but the snail pace of wiiware/vc releases as it is almost makes it meaningless. I mean lets say in a crazy world the wii suddenly had saturn and dreamcast games available. As cool as that would be, there wouldn't be but a handful of games released for it over the next couple years.

Yeah with the 4.0 update and full SD use, technically, we could have like a 1GB file (though it might take days!) and I'm pretty sure this is smaller than that. Anyway, this sucks...since I currently only have a pc and wii for downloadable games...
31. FJOJR
29 Apr 2009, 05:30 BST
I say they bust out Nintendo Vs. Capcom. That would sell a few million.
32. SmaMan
29 Apr 2009, 06:44 BST
@Objection_Blaster
That wouldn't work. Since all the new SD menu does is copy the game to the NAND and plays it, files would have to be at the very most 512mb... and that's with NOTHING else on the NAND. Let's face it, we won't get downloadable games like this on the Wii because Nintendo dug themselves into a hole with the Wii's wonky storage system.
@FJOJR
I actually had a dream that that game existed in an arcade. It was awesome!

Regarding MvsC3; the very fact that MvcC2 is being re-released would suggest that Marvel and Capcom have opened up their channels of communication again, so anything could happen. I guess if MvsC3 does well on XBLA/PSN then they might consider taking the series forward once again.
How good would a 2.5D sequel - like SF IV - be?
36. MrLopez

I'll get it on my 360 for sure! I really want to play this game! I love marvel! Capcom not so much.. XD I prefer Konami all the way!
37. Objection_Blaster
29 Apr 2009, 12:45 BST
Okay, I just threw 1GB out there, but the game is less than 512MB on XBLA, etc. because they also have file size regualtions. ANyway, it'd be huge but they could do it. Next, the rumors of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 are looking pretty likely now.
38. Wolfcoyote
29 Apr 2009, 13:56 BST
It WOULD have been awesome if the game came out for WiiWare, but the VC have enough classic fighters already (just not as modern) and collection disks are being released for the Wii anyway. I already have the game for PS2 and played it to death, so I'm not going to miss it too much.
Still, why couldn't this game be released as a physical medium for about $19.99 USD if gamers are desperate enough?

I don't konw what the size of it is on XBLA. Microsoft has broken the size limits a few times in the past, as well as recently with the Watchmen game. I'm pretty sure that topped 1GB.

it seems that Capcom can't release a retail version, at least according to Capcom's Christian Svensson whom said:

41. J.K.
29 Apr 2009, 16:29 BST
Typical bastard play by Capcom. That filesize excuse is bs now that the new system is in place where you don't have the punishing small limitations the Wii itself had. Capcom is just doing another in a long line of cockpunches to the Nintendo base that started back with the N64 and their perpetual carrot on a stick/lie and do something else flipflop game that's gone on a decade now. This is something that could get done if they really wanted to as I recall as I used to do emulation the file size of this both with the arcade and otherwise.
I could get this on my ps3, but to be fair I hated the series as it's the most hosed up unbalanced capcom 2D fighter I can think of. Now had this been Capcom vs SNK I'd be pissed.
42. earl_wickrue
29 Apr 2009, 19:05 BST
I realize that the storage capacity problem means we wont get this as a downloadable, but based on The Industry's policy of "Release any and all games on wii for 30$msrp" we'll probably get to play this gem on our beloved wii very soon.

I found the article ataffa1 linked VERY informative. It explains why Marvel vs. Capcom 2 can release on PSN and Live Arcade, and opens up the extreme likelihood of a new sequel sometime thereafter. Basically, what Damo said (but without his little typo).
Obviously, J.K. STILL doesn't understand how the Wii system update works. How long will it be before everybody here is on the same page about this stuff? It was already explained earlier on this comment thread, after all.

I don't really care honestly, but I do want the other MVC games, including X-Men Children of the Atom & Marvel Super Heroes on the VC Arcade. They're probably much smaller than MVC 2, so I'm guessing they're very possible.

Well, that sucks. I have a PS3 and XBox 360, but I feel bad for the fans who don't have those. I don't suppose could use the CAPCOM vs Tatsunoko engine, replace the Tatsunoko characters with Marvel ones, and release it globally? I'd be fine with the Tatsunoko characters, but since there is some illogical legal barrier keeping those guys inside Japan...

warioswoods
OK I am so tiered of hearing about the SD card solution not being a real solution.
Not to pick on you warioswoods, there are many that have said the same thing.
Do you know not one program on any system EVER has run from a disk or any storage device? It’s true; every program ran on any system PC or game system first loads the program from the storage device to MEMORY. This is basically what the Wii SD solution is doing. The issue with the Wii is the lack of internal memory to even load the programs, plus a speed issue with the transfer rates from SD. While this could have been a bit better if pre-allocated cash buffers could have been used to make this a bit more efficient the solution is solid. Now the whole SD menu thing is the weak part of the solution it could have all been tied into the one main menu. With the slow SD I/O rate and the lack of core system memory I doubt Wii will see much of an increase in WiiWare title sizes at least not in this first Wii Generation. It could be done but hey it took over 2 years to get SD games to load and this would be much harder!
As for this game not making it to WiiWare this is a good thing last thing we want to start seeing are watered down versions of games just so they can get some Wii market space; that would be bad. I am glad to see the good choice made not to port a game if it can’t be 100%. I just hope that Nintendo is learning from these mistakes (never limit your system on storage or memory). As for us Wii Fan-boys we will have to wait for WiiHD or Wii2 or Wee or what ever they end up calling it and hope they did learned there lesson.

58. MDee14

What is the size of this game? I know that the Wii Copies the game to the system. But know way this game is bigger than 512MB. If Nintendo Allows users to save all the channels to the SD card, then they can have this game come to WiiWare. Nintendo has the right solution by coping the file to the internal memory, all they have to do is allow all the channels be copied, and then we wont be missing out on any games, and we can get bigger file games come to the Wii.
