This week brings a new western publisher on board - Activision! And they haven't just released one game, but two!
If you bought a DSi you'll be quite glad to hear that there's already some new games available this week. Of course the Wii Shop gets its usual new WiiWare and VC game as well!
Mixed Messages is Activision's first DSiWare game. It's pretty simple - First, you enter a sentence. Then, you pass the DSi to a friend, who has to illustrate that sentence. He then passes it on to another friend, who will then have to write a sentence he thinks suits that picture, and so on! This really only seems to be fit for very large groups of people - Activision claims it's for 2 to 21 players!
If you would like to learn some more magic tricks you can do so this week as well - Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games will teach you a bunch of tricks with which you read your friends' minds.
If you'd rather stick with the Wii Shop you might find this week's releases a bit disappointing. For WiiWare, you can grab Party Fun Pirate, the North American localization of Pop-Up Pirate, which was released in Europe quite a while ago. We thought it was pretty mediocre, so if you were thinking of getting it you might want to reconsider!
As said, Activision has not just started supporting DSiWare - They've started supporting the VC as well. Their first game is, naturally, an installment in their most well-known series, Pitfall! In Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for the Genesis, you once again visit the jungle, swinging from vines, dodging snakes and jumping across pitfalls - The only difference is that you play as Pitfall Harry's son, because his dad has gone missing and he's out to find him. The game is quite well animated, but as far as gameplay goes it's fairly standard. A nice feature which will have been hopefully retained for the VC release is that you can unlock the ability to play the original Atari 2600 Pitfall! game.
Sadly, this means that, once again, there's no The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask! Hopefully next week!
More from Nintendo's press release:
NINTENDO DOWNLOAD: PIRATES AND PITFALLS SEND MASTERFUL MIXED MESSAGES
April 13, 2009
The new Nintendo DSi™ system has been on store shelves for just a week now. Today Activision's Mixed Messages™ becomes the first third-party downloadable game for the new system. Mixed Messages is a game of electronic telephone that can accommodate a whopping 21 players. On the WiiWare™ side, fans will find a game based on the popular Pop-Up Pirate™ toy that might have players sticking virtual swords into their Mii™ characters. And classic character Pitfall Harry Jr. makes his debut on the Virtual Console.
Nintendo adds new titles to the Nintendo DSi Shop and the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Mondays. Users with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ or Nintendo DSi Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo DSi Points can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop. A Nintendo Points Card™ can be purchased at retail locations. All Nintendo Points from one Nintendo Points Card must be redeemed in either the Wii Shop Channel or the Nintendo DSi Shop. They are not transferable and cannot be divided between the two systems. This week's new games are:
Nintendo DSiWare™
Mixed Messages (Activision, 2-21 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Nintendo DSi Points): Mixed Messages is the hilarious party game of mixed-up miscommunication. Sketch a picture to capture your friends' sentence, or try to figure out what in the world they've drawn. You might start with, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" and end up with "A crazy surfer outruns flying sticks of dynamite while his fans cheer!" Two to 21 players take turns writing sentences and drawing pictures to pass along a message. This isn't a game about winning and losing - it's all about the funny miscommunications that happen along the way. You'll laugh when you see just how wacky things can get. Get together with your friends and mix it up.
Master of Illusion™ Express: Shuffle Games (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): Master of Illusion Express titles are mind-boggling magic tricks pulled from the popular Nintendo DS™ game. Learn the illusions, practice up and amaze your friends. Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games will boggle your audience members' minds as they try to figure out how you know exactly what they're thinking. Also included is the bonus Vanishing Card trick, which the Nintendo DSi system performs for your enjoyment.
WiiWare
Party Fun Pirate™ (TOMY Corporation, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): Based on the popular Pop-Up Pirate toy, players take turns thrusting swords into a barrel that holds your captain captive, trying to see who can insert the most swords into the barrel. Thrust a sword into the wrong hole and you'll send your captain flying, which means it's game over for you! Unique Wii features add to the excitement, making for a fun-filled party game. Try swapping out the captain and putting your custom Mii character in the barrel for some real laughs!
Virtual Console
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated T for Teen - Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure is a side-scrolling action game in which you play adventurer Pitfall Harry Jr. in search of his father, Pitfall Harry. Pitfall Harry has been taken captive by the dreaded warrior spirit Zakelua: Lord of Evil. Armed with only a trusty sling and his father's journal, young Harry Jr. must now venture into the unknown to rescue him … before it's too late! Bungee jump and boomerang your way to safety as you battle through treacherous Mayan jungles, waterfalls and deserted mines. With 13 levels of fast, gripping action, you will need to be attentive and quick - or prepare to die …

Activision's first vc release.
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was unexpected.

There is a code in the game to play the 2600 version of Pitfall!.

Even if I had the money to buy a DSi, I wouldn't buy it until several DSi Ware games that I wanted were on it. And its great to see Activision enter the ring. Pitfall: TMA is quite good.

WiiWare ticked me off so much for my worst fears came true: seeing Pop-Up Pirate (oh, excuse me... "Party Fun Pirate" >_>) by itself.
Anyway, DSiWare release GREATLY makes up for it since I was anticipating the game since I heard about it last week. Glad to see it come out so quickly even though I don't have a DSi. I'd gladly get it if I could. Sounds great with friends. Ambitious project, too.

No, Super Pitfall has been removed from the ESRB listings - apparently the original listing for Super Pitfall was actually for Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. Super Pitfall is quite crappy.

At this point I don't want Nintendo to add any more consoles to the VC. They just won't support them. We should at least have some more arcade titles at this point.

We should at least have some more arcade titles at this point.
Its not the same as porting a ROM to an emulator, game companies would have to create their own emulator to run their own arcade games I believe. And going through the testings would probably take a while. Especially if the announcement Nintendo made was the first time many other companies found out about the VC Arcade. But you're right, I do hope to see some more VCA games.

Don't expect Majora's Mask to be released possibly for another 5 weeks give or take. It will likely be the 300th vc release and with pitfall released today, it makes 295. I kind of wish paper airplane race was released today for dsiware. It looks more fun than birds and beans which is the same price and already released in Europe. Maybe next week?
18. Tony
13 Apr 2009, 14:28 BST
For those interested, NA is 5 weeks away from the 300th VC game. (assuming we get 1 game a week) At this rate it looks like it will arrive May 18th

DSiWare lacks a lot this week. If Japan has 30 games on DSiWare, and 6 months of time to release these in the US, why were they not translated faster and put up for download faster?
As for Wii, I would have been fine with these titles if the DSiWare was bigger and focused on more. So, all sections of the shop suck this week.

The number of DSiWare titles is what I expected, though I had hoped for Dr. Mario Express or another ArtStyle. Mixed Messages is no big thrill if it's simply a local multiplayer game, and the Master of Illusion stuff isn't my bag. At least some games were released instead of none.
As for Majora's Mask being the 300th VC title - that seems like a pretty solid bet.

Just like I said last week, don't expect Majora's Mask until next month as the 300th NA release. (The 18th, assuming we get only single VC releases up to that point.) While this update leaves a lot to be desired, not to mention this game came out of no where, it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be getting Super Smash Bros. two weeks from now as that's the 10th anniversary of the original games release. Unfortunately that means that next weeks update probably won't be that great either so we all just need to brace ourselves, okay?

Glad to see Activision finally jump into the fray, though I doubt we'll see many if any of their classic games that aren't attatched to current series (money-grubbing donkies).
Lack of ANYTHING I want to download: BOO! I swear, Nintendo and Sony don't WANT my money for downloadable games! Microsoft does, but most of what they release is SUPPOSED to be available on PSN as well, and I'd rather avoid using my RRoD Box if I can help it (just being a bit of a jerk here; I like my 360 to a point, but will ALWAYS pick PS3 over it given a choice).
So now instead of wasting my money on more downloads, I'll go back to playing some of the many games I already have. Should I be thanking these morons for that?

These NOA mondays are kind of like getting Christmas presents from your grandparents when you were a kid. You were always excited to see what they got you. The anticipation built as Christmas morning approached. The day finally arrived and you ripped into the big 'ol box they sent...the thing is, about 10% of the time it would be something fun that you actually wanted, but most of the time it would be clothes or a boring NES game with terrible graphics that no one heard of.

The Dsi just came out, i think the express versions of existing games are just fillers to hold peoples appetites until more third party games are made. I want to see more fresh dsiware games like warioware:snapped and the art style game that were released last week.
On the subject of the 300th VC game, im guessing it will be super smash bros or legend of zelda:majoras mask.
62. Edwin
13 Apr 2009, 17:44 BST
If Nintendo is really going to wait until the 300th game to release Majora's Mask, they could at least give us more than one game per week so that we don't have to wait five more weeks. It wouldn't be that hard, just give us four C64 games and Majora's Mask next week, for example.

To those thinking that next week could be SSB week think again. We won't get SSB until April 27th if ever at all.
I am also beginning to wonder if USA will start ending up like Europe has been on the Nintendo front for years. That being where they get everything last.
If nothing i want comes out by the end of this month then i will be getting one of the Street Fighter 2 games.Because there is 1 Street Fighter 2 game that i liked playing back in the day.

@Riddleguy: But the DSi has been out in Japan since November. They have a LOT more DSiWare games than we do, and there shouldn't have been anything stopping them from getting them localized and ready to go in other regions at launch. Can someone confirm that the code to unlock the 2600 version of pitfall is this VC release? Of course having to enter that code every single time would be slightly annoying. That would be enough for me to shell out the extra for a non-Japanese Megadrive game -- assuming it gets a PAL release...
Otherwise yet another 1&1 release for North America, which is very disappointing.

13 Apr 2009, 18:18 BST
Damn, I was kinda expecting Bubble Bobble Plus or Dr. Mario Express this week.
Well, I still think we won't get an arcade game until the 27th along with SSB.

@Sean Aaron: Why WOULDN'T the code be in this release? Doesn't make any sense to me. Also, due to the VC's resume function, you should only need to enter the code once, provided it unlocks a menu option. If it takes you straight to the game, that's another matter. I wouldn't know, having never played the game. Just thinking in type here.

Now those who own a DSi can join in the disapointment we feel so often on Mondays. What a crap update! I'm glad I didn't buy a DSi yet. I guess it means its time for me to give Uncharted Waters: New Horizons a try; did anyone else get this? I was really hoping for Cave Story but I should know better by now. As for XBLA; there are some good games but almost everything is WAY overpriced! Puzzle Quest: Galatrix 1600 points! At least they have their deal-of-the-week thing which would be awesome if Nintendo did that too! Sony is just as bad at neglecting it's customers on the download front but I heard they might actually release Fat Princess this week!

Well I can't say that I'm not disappointed that Swords & Soldiers didn't come out this week, or as Bahamut ZERO stated, at least Bubble Bobble.
And thanks for mentioning Ikaurga Daz. Now I gotta go get in a quick game before I start these reviews. Sheesh.

I wanted to quote this before but i was too lazy to look it up.
In an DSI article about reggie talking about DSIware, it says "He also says that the company will be granting third parties licenses to develop DSiWare and titles should be available around six weeks after the DSi's launch." So in five weeks, people should be happier with the Dsiware being released. Right now, the majority of the dsiware is by nintendo it seems.

Once I saw pitfalls in the press release I immediately thought it was gonna be the trash super pitfall. Why do so many people want the original super smash bros.? Melee and Brawl are better.

I'm inclined to believe the reports that NCL calls the VC Shots for every region. So even if NoA wants to, if its not in NCL's grand plan, they probably can't do it.

And would you believe that I actually removed one of them. Almost went for the Quadruple Negative.

@ Bahamut ZERO (41):
Xbox Live is commonly cheaper than that. There have been several instances of 13months for $30 + no tax + free shipping this year. There was even an instance of 400 XBL pts included with the $30
Definitely worth it for the gold content and the wider support of 360 games.

Mixed messages: I played this (pen and paper version) with a group of friends for the first time not too long ago, and it was great fun!
I still firmly believe that it isn't necessary to utilize video games to play party games that just as well can be done via traditional board games or even pen and paper. Imagine what would happen if they tried releasing a Wiiware version of "twister"
One exception to that rule I think, is strategy games such as chess and checkers, which can be played against a CPU or players from around the world.

I loved this game, but I would've preferred the SNES version.
Why companies insist on putting Genesis versions of everything over superior SNES versions is beyond me

Glad Activision has offcially joined the Nintnedo downloads. Pitfall looks pretty good and I may download it. (When I download every other game that I want) I still say buy the Collector's Disc for the gamecube if you want Majora's Mask. Still don't have a DSi so nothing there for me.

The only WiiWare I've ever had any interest in is SBCG4AP. Most of the VC games I've never heard of, so I'm still waiting.
NES
Darkwing Duck
Duck Tales
Rescue Rangers
Tale Spin
SNES
Mario Paint
StarFox
GENESIS
Gargoyles
Tecmo Super Hockey

When I first read that this game got released I thought this was the 32X version of the game, but it's the Genesis one, don't know if I'll get it but it's good to see Genesis games released on the VC that arn't on a collection already.
I'm also glad another publisher is supporting the VC, that's always good news to hear.

I liked that Activision has started supporting the VC, I think these are their other games that have little to no licensing issues & probably can be released.:
Vilgilante 8
Nightmare Creatures
Archon
Stealth ATF
Shanghai (Jpn-only)
Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye
Sword Master
Slaughter Sport
Galaxy 5000
Ultimate Air Combat
Mechwarrior
Biometal
X-Kaliber 2097
Radical Rex
Mechwarrior 3050
Spider-Man (Activision still has the license after all. Don't they?)

@ marktheshark: The more people that buy Pitfall, the better the chances that those games come out
Also, I don't think Activision developed Vigilante 8, because another version of it has been released on XBLA.

Then who developed it? I think Activision still published the 360 version didn't they?
108. brooks83
14 Apr 2009, 03:00 BST
According to Wikipedia, a company called Luxoflux developed the original games, and Isopod Labs (formed from the founders of Luxoflux) developed the XBLA version. I guess as long as they aren't owned by Microsoft it's still possible for the N64 version to come to the VC.

I just saw a gameplay video of Pitfall and it actually doesn't look too bad. It somewhat reminded me of Earthworm Jim. Yeah I know, weird comparison. Even though its not a game I will be downloading maybe platform fans will enjoy this one. So, I see Nintendo released a pirate-themed game on WiiWare this week. Isn't it kind of a bad week for pirates? I don't think the U.S. Navy SEALS would endorse this game! Too bad no Somali pirates were harmed in the making of this game!

The only thing good about this list is Pitfall. It was one of my first games for the SNES but sadly it quit working in god knows what year. Its been soo long but It'll be on my to-get list next time i have money on the Shop Channel

@StarDust: Completely agreed. Unless the board game in question allows you to play against real players online or simulated ones (for the friend-challenged) I don't really see the point. I mean the Hasbro Battleship apparently puts up a screen stating players should look away from the TV whilst the other person is taking their turn! Board games tend to be more social because you're actually facing the other players rather than all looking at a tv screen!
@Stuffgamer1: Well, I wouldn't assume anything because it's an unlockable extra (though excellent point about the save state feature of the VC) and is apparently an emulated VCS which would be running under an emulated Genesis. If they couldn't be bothered with the testing (or didn't know this was included) it could easily be left out which would lessen my desire for it...

A pretty medicore update, not the worst, but not the best.
Also did I see a comment blaming Reggie for DSiWare? Wtf, REALLY?
I feel so sad for Reggie, he's been taking alot of heat recently, especially for choices that aren't his. Being the face of a company must suck.

I won't buy a DSi until Nintendo Officially announce a VC service, I read some where that Reggie said that he believes the GB still has another Christmas left in it, so how do we take that as a hint? I'd Love to play Mario Land without giving the game or a GB back to it's owner. I don't know what other users say on here but the DSi has hardly been a sell out? but maybe guys in America and Canada could have their view on this? I was going to leave buying a DSi until for when i'm next in New York but it's region locked so I can't now.......

@Sean Aaron: Well, if they didn't know about it, then it would probably be in there untested. Actually, it's irrelevant. It was confirmed to be there on the game's page comment thread yesterday. If we'd just thought to look there, this discussion here wouldn't have been necessary! Oh, well. It's good to know it's there for those who care, anyway.

I hope they release Rival Turf or Super Mario Kart sometime soon... If they're going to give us 2 games a week they might as well be good ones.
