Nintendo Download: Art, Cards and Crystals Have Gamers Seeing Spots (US)

My Life as a Darklord is here!

My Life as a Darklord is here!

Mostly a catch up week for North America!

Nintendo of America is playing catch up this week with the release of three titles that have already been released in Europe.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord (WiiWare - 1000 Points) was just recently released in Europe and you can check out our review of the game to find out what we thought about it. It's the sequel to My Life as a King, but only in name - This time you don't play as the good guys but rather as the bad guys, and you're not building cities but defending your evil tower from invading heroes!

5 Spots Party (WiiWare - 500 Points) is another recent European release and although it's not going to set the world on fire, we still felt like it might be worth it for fans of this type of game in our review. As you might be able to guess it's a simple spot the difference game - You're presented with two seemingly identical pictures and will have to spot 5 subtle differences between them.

Art Style: ZENGAGE (DSiWare - 500 Points) is secretly the same game as Art Style: NEMREM which was released in Europe a while back. It's one of the more simple Art Style games - You're presented with a grid with tiles, which have to be slid around in order to get them in the required positions. You can check out our review of the game here to find out what we thought of it.

Last but not least, we do have one new title this week in Battle Poker (WiiWare - 800 Points) from Left Field Productions. I guess you can't have too many video poker games, now can you? I guess it's okay to kill each other in battle, as long as you don't show any boobies. As always we'll have a review of the game up over the next few days.

I guess it goes without saying that we're not getting any Virtual Console love this week. This is getting a bit old. :(

Here's this week's press release:

Looking for a big name to bolster your downloading agenda this week? We've got two words for you: FINAL FANTASY®. The latest additions to the ever-growing WiiWare™ game library include the new FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES®: My Life as a Darklord™, plus a fast-paced poker title and a brain-teasing party game that everyone in the household can enjoy. Also this week, the Nintendo DSiWare™ service welcomes a slick new installment in the Art Style™ series, mixing extraordinary sounds and visuals to create a captivating puzzle game.

In the 1-Player mode, you must find the differences before time runs out in order to beat the game's highest scores. How far do you think you can go?

Nintendo DSiWare

Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 500 Nintendo DSi Points™

Clear each stage by matching all of the cores and cells. As you progress through the game's 100-plus stages, you'll encounter cells with special characteristics, such as immovability, which further add to the challenge. To truly master ZENGAGE, you must keep your mind sharp and employ careful strategy to complete stages in as few moves as possible. Combining wistful graphics and mesmerizing sound, ZENGAGE creates a surreal world that should be experienced by all puzzle gaming fans.

Just download Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Its great, you'll enjoy it. And regarding the lack of VC games today, you got Pulseman last week and Secret Command this week only you got this week's game a week early. This just must be Nintendo's way of keeping things even. An increase in games one week means the next week must have a decrease in games. You are still getting one VC game every week even if this week it doesn't feel like it. I predict much bitching though.

Worst update of the year and no VC game. Nintendo truly will not make a good Virtual Console service. And just to rub it in they included another overpriced poker game.

As Bass XO stated, a bad rollout this week can mean a great lineup next week. It's good too, because I only have 400 Points until Thursday night (payday) anyway. I'll just finish up on some WiiWare titles this week.

Although, Darklord looks like a worthy purchase but this time I'm staying away from the additional content. I went a little too crazy in downloads for MLAAK...

9. chunky_droid Australia 20 Jul 2009, 13:46 BST

Dear god! No VC game! I seriously can't believe that out of the over 300+ games that's on the service, you guys can't find a game that you wanna play.

If you've already gone through all you need to, there's probably not a lot gonna come out that you'll be interested in either.

Seriously, I've downloaded 80 VC games and I still haven't cracked all the ones I want yet.

Oh, and as I said on the forums, I'm guessing 3 hours since the first post we'll get 100 posts, majority complaining about lack of VC. :)

Hey, I just thought - you might actually get Super Smash Bros. next week to make up for this week!! Although with the way things are, you might get 3/10 Arcade Altered Beast...

KnucklesSonic8

Battle Poker might turn out like Jungle Speed. I'm more hopeful for it than I was before. It looks different from the normal formula so don't be quick to pass it off.

But yeah, I'm still in a bit of shock about the lack of ANY VC game when there are a couple of games we're still waiting on.

Overall I say the past weeks have been better than this update but that being said, it's great to have FFCC: My Life as a Darklord now.

@Bass X0: Yeah, it's quite possible. I honestly thought we might get it today.

It had to happen eventually, and even though I expected it, I didn't expect it this soon. :(

At least we got another Art Style, even if it doesn't look as good as the others.

I just don't understand Nintendo. Why hype VC fans with new consoles only to support them on blue moons? And now no VC game at all? Weird.

TwilightV

19. TwilightV United States 20 Jul 2009, 14:18 BST

My guess is the lack of VC updates is due to the large amount of DLC in MLAADL.

BTW, Animal Crossing City Folk players get a free model of the Dolphin from Pikmin starting today. :)

Anyways, this is the FINAL week i'm letting no Monkey Island slide.

Stuffgamer1

20. Stuffgamer1 United States 20 Jul 2009, 14:18 BST

Bass X0

Sean Aaron

23. Sean Aaron United Kingdom 20 Jul 2009, 14:37 BST

If the poker game has online that could be groovy; otherwise, no.

To make up for no VC release, everyone should just buy 5 Spots Party; the added tics from bottled-up rage over the lack of a VC release will increase the challenge!

25. Metang United States 20 Jul 2009, 14:39 BST

facepalm

Worst update this year. Save FFCC:MLAADL.

You know why VC doesn't get much love? Because the majority of Nintendo's consumers are morons. They don't buy "old games from obsolete systems." Ninty's consumers are retards who, instead of buying good games like you'd find on VC, simply look for the next new thing. Keep in mind that these are the people who would buy a Mario App over MFC.

pixelman

Stuffgamer1

Kevin

29. Kevin United States 20 Jul 2009, 14:47 BST

Worst update ever! No games interest me and no VC game this week? WTF?! The VC is the reason I bought the Wii not for crappy and uninteresting WiiWare games! I hope this week isn't the reason why they decided to give us two games last week. If it was they should of stuck to one game last week and this week instead of pissing us off! The wait for Final Fantasy continues. Nintendo, I'm starting to lose faith in you guys to release quality nintendo download weeks. Give us what we want which is more VC games and not more CrapWare!

Only the second time this has happened in North America that no Virtual Console games were released this week.

Well, next Monday we'll probably get Altered Beast because we haven't yet recieved our VCA title for the month and then the update after that is the first one of the next month so it'll be a C64 game, so no Smash until AT LEAST August 10th... Why does Nintendo insist on screwing North America over on first party titles? Meanwhile Japan will continue getting fatter on VCA titles, plus others, while Europe will probably get Super Mario Kart early next month just before we see Smash. It's just not right.

Tony

55. Tony United States 20 Jul 2009, 16:21 BST

I think we'll get Space Invaders before we get Altered Beast. A VC game will be back next week, but it still does not make up for the fact that Nintendo wants to stretch the VC lineup until the year 3000 instead of making a great service that is consumer driven. It's very hard to excited about upcoming classic games when we only get a trickle of games as is. And yes the VC was a selling point for me as well and the first year of the VC was awesome.

@Chibi Link: it may have to do with trademarks... sometimes there's a good chance that someone else has already released a product or owns a company or whatever with the same name within a certain region, and of course Nintendo wants to be sure not to step on any toes and get into legal hot water over it.

The latest outrage from Nintendo, brought to us courtesy of KnucklesSonic8, who e-mailed them about this problem and received a response which can be read in full in this thread:

Their automatic e-mail reply to VC quantity complains is over a year old, claiming that we average 10 VC releases per month! Obviously, that hasn't happened in AGES (we didn't even hit 10 in the month with the VCA launch)! It concerns me that the company can't even keep its departments on the same page so that this doesn't happen!

I spent $10 on MLAADL so I can't say I really NEED a new VC game to download (though it would have been nice). Truth be told, I'm still catching up on past greats, like Pulseman and LIT.

If you really want to send Nintendo a message, download more VC titles! Vote with your wallets, not your whining. Go back and download Gate of Thunder, or Earthworm Jim or every other VC game you've been "thinking" about downloading but been putting off. Once there's a spike in VC interest, I think that Nintendo will be willing to push more games out.

Also, has anyone else considered that Square released this game under condition that Nintendo not release anything to compete with it? That way MLAADL will look all the more appealling, and Square will get more sales.

Sure, they will continue to release games for it, but I don't think we will ever go back to more than one release a week, other than special occasions. It's clear that Nintendo's focus now is on WiiWare.

1500 points left, and week after week, I never want to spend it on anything. I'm tired of waiting each week for something good, only to be let down by more of the same. There's hundreds of games nintendo could release right now, but they choose to not release ANY. And the wiiware is usually shovelware or average. And the few good games usually never interest me.

Ugh, I give up. The Wii Shop Channel is useless to me now.

I have a question. Why is it everytime America gets screwed over, Bass XO is always the first one to post? To keep things even, Bass XO? What the hell does that mean. I know deep down you enjoy it when America gets screwed because you always talk about America's updates have to be even and fair compared to Europe. However, when Europe doesn't get any games, you always say it isn't fair because Europe is always getting screwed and such. You always point out how many games Europe is behind America and such. Why does it bother you so much that America has 8 more games than Europe?

You talk about being even huh? So how about this. Europe has gotten 2 games each week during the Hanabi Festival. Since you talk so much about being even, then after it's over, you guys shouldn't get any games for 4 weeks. That way 8 games in 8 weeks. That's nice and even huh? I bet you wouldn't like that one bit, so don't talk about our update today being nice and even, okay? That post you posted here and at Gamefaqs really pissed me off today. To me it seems like you are rubbing it in, especially since you made a special topic about it on Gamefaqs highlighting that we got no games.

I think some members need to calm down a little. I know you're upset, but damn. I was annoyed to see no VC game but over the past several months I've seen the quality in VC games gradually slow to a trickle, so I'm not that shocked. If you're that pissed off, email Nintendo and let them know. It won't do anything, but it'll give you another outlet.

I'm here most weeks waiting for the moment the games get announced in the U.S. ready to comment on the releases, whether its a good week or a bad week (which this week was). As a European myself I'll obviously be championing my own region in terms of Virtual Console releases.

@ 86, The Fox

Or how about just call NOA & start cussing loudly at the representive who answered the phone. Won't do anything also, but at least you can vent your rage.

It's quite silly how NOA hasn't released a VC game this week, but has at least 52 games that they can pick from according to the coming soon list.

Bass X0

@Aenaida. LOL, I had the same expression! :D

This sucks. I wouldn't mind having no VC games this week if the Wiiware games were decent, but besides Dark Lord, they blow chunks. Oh well, at least DSi owners got another Art Style to enjoy.

And I just remembered, I still have to finish that crapload of VC games I downloaded recently.

I guess they didn't get my survey response of Mappy from Nintendo Club; stating that the VC is utterly disappointing already and with the fact they just couldn't come up with one VC game is truly unbelievable.

Truly the saving grace for this week is Darklord which I will get later when I having nothing else to play.

Actually @ 89, marktheshark...
@ 86, The Fox is DEFINATELY RIGHT btw; except the whole email Nintendo with angry comments part! That's because no ammount of complaining gets you no where; & emailing Nintendo does no one no good... for everyone Nintendo Fan Boy knows that on God's green earth that Nintendo doesn't listen!

And if I was going to ever say anything in the first place; I would've been cursing up a storm! But do you see me doing it anyway... hell no! I'm smarter than that! Plus I've had my moments of being mad all of the time... but like I keep saying. I just don't care anymore!

Nintendo have better have a freaking good reason for not giving us a VC game today; so they're hiding something secret for next Monday! yes I know I'm waiting for SSB64 as much as everyone else, & I keep whinning about it; but maybe Nintendo will releases it on our last Monday; the 27th of July! If it doesn't bring something good; then August will come here shortly anyway!

I know I've been agonizing over this huge long waiting with no SBB64; but I kept myself occupied throughout the these past 2 months playing at least something! I had Punch-Out Wii & Zelda MM to tide me over from May to June; & now I'm playing other Wii games I missed! I got myself a couple of good DBZ & Inuyasha DVD's; which I'm currently watching & enjoying! I even pre-ordered Wii Sports Resort; which I'm looking forward to next week! ;)

"INCONCIEVABLE!"
"BOGUS! HEINIOUS! MOST NON TRIUMPHANT!"
"OH BUGGER!"
Yet no ammount of funny & sad quotes I can come up with will ammount to my frustration! ;)

BTW: only good thing was Final Fantasy My Life as DarkLord; but yes I know I was hoping for something better along with it! :( ;)

MLaaD = 8/10
ZENGAGE = 8/10
5 Spots Party = 5/10
Battle Poker = Probably a 7/10

That's better than Karate Phants and a lot of other weeks we've had! STOP COMPLAINING!!!

I am in agreement with something big will happen next week. It's only logical. Sadly for once I'm not interested in a release but next week should be fantastic. Besides even if the WiiWare that we usually get isn't that good and the VC games have a bad release rate... Then thats where I buy an actual Wii game lol. Oh and I am happy maybe only like three people maybe complained about SSB64. That is all.

MarkyVigoroth

99. MarkyVigoroth Puerto Rico 20 Jul 2009, 22:29 BST

When I saw the lack of Virtual Console releases today, I thought, "This is Europe in Puerto Rico!" (since Europe gets plenty of WiiWare-only weeks). However, I agree with Bass X0-san; we already got 2 Virtual Console games last time, so we should hold back our complaints this week. (Besides, this is only one week!) If you ask me, though, I think the lack of Virtual Console releases today is related to that "What Nintendo games do you want released in Virtual Console?" article on which we all commented. (Did Nintendo leave Virtual Console alone today in order to straighten things out so that we finally get the games for which we actually asked in that article?)

By the way, the WiiWare launch week should not count as a no-Virtual Console week, since Nintendo wanted to focus on their new service at the time.

As for WiiWare itself, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darkl__d came out today? Now I know what to buy for my birthday this week if I ever get a Nintendo Points card on that day...

At least when Wii Ware began with 6 or 7 titles Nintendo reminded it gamers, in a press release, that the VC would return the following week. We got no such warning today. With every second that passes Japan gets another classic arcade game.

No balance is kept because the number of wiiware releases has increased in the last few weeks and has yet to decline. In a way I guess it's nice that VC isn't much of a focus as it gives new games time to shine. Doen't mean I like it though. :-(

Stuffgamer1

It looks to me like Europe has all the good stuff nowadays anyway. We're only JUST about to get Little King's Story, which they've had for months. We STILL don't have Mario Super Picross, Devil World, or NPC: Pikmin 2. Or SSB64, for those who care.

See the problem here? Anybody can find ways to be jealous of the other region, either way. You can't just say "Europe gets crapped on" anymore. Things have changed.

Anyway, let's hope it doesn't repeat itself next week like it did for us not to long ago! :(

@BassXO: It's quite funny when you think that Europe get little victories over America but we're all in the same boat when it comes to comparing us against Japan.

Bass X0

113. Bass X0 United Kingdom 21 Jul 2009, 18:40 BST

Its also funny to think of how we were when we didn't get VC games every week for a while compared to how the Americans are at their first time not getting a VC game. And yeah, neither region can compare against the giant that is Japan but then we can't hope to do so. * sigh *

Mike

114. Mike United States 21 Jul 2009, 18:59 BST

Yeah, I remember the first time Europe didn't get a VC game. The title of the topic was "Epic Fail", and just about every person from Europe complained about it. One guy complained and said that Europe was being treated like a bunch of used condoms. Stop acting like you guys were so much more mature than us when you were not. If anything, you guys were worse.

Europe wasn't anymore mature about it than we were this week, so don't paint them out to be more mature than us. They complain just as much as people in America. Why should we have to get used to it, when it likely won't continue past this week.

the level of fanboism here is ridiculous. People tripping all over themselves to justify no VC games this week. As the VC lumbers into obscurity and death it just gets more and more ridiculous. Not counting the thousands of games on C64 there are still a few thousand games from the other systems, being released at a rate of 52 a year..
They must have the worst team ever working on this if they can't secure the publishing rights to 2-3 old games a week that would otherwise never make another penny again.

Just imagine the conversation:
N:Hey you know that old game you guys made like 20 years ago?
C:yeah, what about it?
N:Well we'd like to put it on our service and let you get some money.
C:what would it cost us?
n:nothing there are already unlimited copies of the rom floating around the internet
C:So basically free money?
N:Yeah, all right if we do it?
C: jeeze I dunno..

"However, I agree with Bass X0-san; we already got 2 Virtual Console games last time, so we should hold back our complaints this week. (Besides, this is only one week!)" Yeah sorry, 1 a week isn't acceptable to start with..
