Sexy Poker - ESRB Rated Sans Nudity

Posted Sun, 19 Jul 2009 by Corbie Dillard

Too hot to handle?

Too hot to handle?

But it still manages to pull an "M" rating.

Well the Sexy Poker ESRB rating saga continues on, and this time the game gets through with an "M" rating. Of course there is no more nudity - only sexy lingerie to stare at.

Below is the official content rating entry for Sexy Poker for the WiiWare service that gives some details on why the game received an "M" rating.

SEXY POKER

Platform: Wii

Rating: M for Mature

Content descriptors: Simulated Gambling, Suggestive Themes

Rating Summary: This is a Strip Poker game in which players engage in games of Black Jack and Poker against female avatar opponents. The object of the game is to win hands in order to remove articles of clothing from still images of the female characters. Nurses, police women, office workers, and sports figures can eventually be stripped down to show their lingerie. The female opponents encourage the player with provocative comments such as, "Perhaps you could be my business partner...for tonight at least?" and, "If you impress me, I might give you my special treatment."

Well there you have it. All the fun of strip poker without the nudity. How fun! What's next, the Super Mario Bros. without the Super Mario? :D

If they did get naked and if this would be 500 points I would buy this but they're not naked so... :P

"If you impress me, I might give you my special treatment."

How provocative! I love the ESRB and their literal explaination of a game's content. It's as far opposite from a press release as could be imagined!

So it's strip poker, without the nudity now? Hmmmm interesting!! :D

The ESRB is so closeminded when it comes to sexual content. The two descriptors are ones most commonly found in Teen rated games! What was the point of taking the nudity out then? Nudity is allowed in a M rated game, just not sex.

What a load of crap!
Even if I did consider exposed female breasts a form of nudity (which I don't), I'd still complain that an M-rated video game has a harder time getting sanctioned nudity than an R-rated movie, both of which are restricted from being purchased by anyone under 17 years of age without a guardian present. This should fit nicely alongside Pong Toss.

My thought process as I read the article is as follows

Wiiware gets an m rated game, ok. Wiiware gets "sexy" for its m rated game....I guess that is allright. It has no nudity...what is the m for again?

brandonbwii

20. brandonbwii United States 20 Jul 2009, 01:38 BST

i guess the nudity pushed it too close to the AO territory. I also noticed the quote "I'll always know what's in your hand" is gone from the description. sigh, gameloft and their "sexy lady" obsession in most of their mobile titles was a bit much anyway.

"Of course there is no more nudity - only sexy lingerie to stare at."

Call me crazy, but I've always found a woman in fine lingerie to be far more erotic than mere nudity anyhow.

I doubt, however, that either the lingerie or the women donning it are particularly fine in this instance.

22. Stuffgamer1 United States 20 Jul 2009, 02:25 BST

As bad an idea as I had already thought this was, it's even worse now. Half-compromising on the game just to get it released (I suspect Nintendo made they remove actually nudity and not the ESRB, given what games I've seen release at "M" with nudity in the past), but doing so in such a way as to turn off most of the intended audience? That just reeks of stupid! They'd be better off not releasing it at all!

as far as I know the dirtier versions of the game also dont have any real nudity but only reduce the girls to panties and stars to cover them up.

Omega

I am sure that the game will sell well for the following two reasons:

  • Most children who buy WiiWare do not inform about the games before purchasing them. So they don't quess that the girls will not take their clothes off completely. How should they know? It is rumoured that there are still some who have not found NintendoLife yet.
  • The M-rating gives the impression that there is more to see in the game than in your usual Jump and Run game. I would not be surprised if Gameloft downright asked to receive this rating. Although the ESRB originally said: "No, this is eC or at most E".

But there is one thing that I can still not understand. Why should anyone be interested in seeing girls in a video game when there is the internet? Because they care for a round of poker?

Because earning the sights is much more pleasing than just easily clicking a link on internet. And it's always more interesting to see someone undressing. You know, slowly revealing more and more. And when every single part of the undressing is earned by playing well the satisfaction of completing the level and seeing the result will be much greater.

Sex - something virtually everyone will do in their lives and something that is necessary for you to have been born in the first place, that's essentially the best thing anybody will ever experience.
Killing people - something virtually nobody will do in their lives and something that's horrible and most of us never would want to do.
The first gets an NC-17/AO rating, the second gets PG/T. Go figure.

Pretty much what I was thinking... No point in even buying it. Then again, there was little point in buying it even if it had nudity because there are hundreds of strip poker flash games of varying quality for free on the internet.

WTF?!? Sex sells, and I'm buyin', just not this game NOW.
@Steve Brule how does that set women back 20 years? Yeah we are gonna make them wear hair spray w/ the big puff balls of hair for their bangs and bedazzled jean jackets with holes in them because this game is coming out. I play strip poker sometimes and I get naked too not just the woman and then most the time we have some pretty wild sex to cap it off so everyone is a winner. As for this game they get paid to pose like that and some women can get what ever they want with a little bit of flirting or sex. They get paid more in porn too unlike men who most the time have to start out in gay porn to make any money. I hear women are still used as sex slaves all over the world and as sad as it is I don't think making a strip poker game is gonna make or break them.

And even if there were, I would never buy it, since it would be seen on a big TV in my living room where everyone could see it! And I already have a computer with internet connection. :D
