Retro remakes and WiiWare go together like bleeps and bloops, like gloomy arcades and sticky floors, like burgers and relish. How appropriate then that MonkeyPaw Games and Frozen Codebase are bringing BurgerTime HD to Nintendo's download service this summer.
A game about creating a giant and delicious burger, when a press release contains phrases like "we love the fact that playing the game makes our team really hungry" there's really not much else we need to say, but we'll try anyway. With Frozen Codebase — they of Jam City Rollergirls fame — behind the wheel, plus the apparent inclusion of online and local multiplayer modes, this could turn out to be a tasty treat.
BurgerTime HD for WiiWare will be served this summer, with the first screenshots below.
MonkeyPaw Games Announces Retro Revamp BurgerTime HD
Reborn classic will make its delicious digital download debut this summer
Hokkaido, Japan – March 30, 2011 - MonkeyPaw Games is proud to announce the official digital download release of BurgerTime HD, a transformed version of the original classic puzzler. Hungry gamers - new and old - can now rest assured that their fast food favorite will return this summer as BurgerTime HD releases on Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PlayStation®Network, Nintendo’s WiiWare™ service and PC.
A unique cylindrical playing field reinvigorates the familiar classic gameplay of creating enormous hamburgers while fending off wieners, condiments and spices. The rich 3D world allows players to see the entire landscape of a level while figuring out the fastest way to the next burger. By strategically mapping the obstacle-littered platforms, numerous paths of burger creation can be explored.
Four-player online, split-screen local multiplayer and other savory ingredients will be showcased for the first time. Starving bosses, pepper shakers and the devilish Mr Egg will be featured in Chef Peter Pepper's recipe for culinary dominance.
“It's been 29 years since the original debut and now BurgerTime is back and much better than ever. By creating unique platform features while faithfully retaining the original gameplay, BurgerTime HD will redefine retro evolution", said John Greiner, President of MonkeyPaw Games. "We also love the fact that playing the game makes our team really hungry."

My local arcade happens to be very un-gloomy,thank you.
Anyway, online and local multiplayer in a burger making game? Might be fun.
Burger Time HD: Not HD Edition
@Raylax Exactly what I was thinking
Am I the only one who remembers playing Burger Time in an actual arcade? xD This game looks interesting to say the least....
@Raylax how do you know the HD stands for high-definition? It could stand for hot dogs.
I played it alot on the Mattel Intellivision... a great game!
Ummm... well... at least its coming to WiiWare.
I haven't even tried BurgerTime NES and I'm allready super excited for this!
... Must be the wii release drought... but I still think it looks epic!
It's a PUN, GET IT?!? . . . bahahahahahaha
@Zaphod:
You and me both. And don't forget Joust, Moon Patrol, Battlezone, Zaxxon, Mario Brothers (the original, not Super), Pole Position, Galaga and Galaxian. True arcade classics.
Could't care less about remakes, I want the arcade original.
@Zaphod Beeblebrox - I remember all those games! I remember also Kangaroo, Elevator Action, Kung Fu, and Popeye....I played them all in an arcade before home consoles could contain them.
What's with the circular playing field? It looks like they're trying to make BurgerTime into a platformer, and I don't think it's going to go well. Was there some giant outcry to make the game different?
Hmmmm, I'm not liking this "we'll update it by making it 3D!" thing. They tried that in the mid-late 90s and almost without fail the 3D versions sucked compared to the originals. 3D don't make it better folks. I'm sure it could be a fun game, but it's just not going to be the Burgertime I enjoy. I do wish someone would put in on the VCA in Japan already since we're apparently not getting Data East Arcade Classics in Europe...
@Sean Aaron: Agreed. Remember that one Frogger game on the Playstation? It blowed chunks. Hopefully Burgertime HD doesn't have a similar fate but I have a feeling it will.
aaaarrrrggggghhhhhh!!!! Hulk brain hurt.
What Raylax said.
I dont remember Peter Peper that old, I prefer his aspect on the original arcade artwork... or maybe I should just let it go and pretend he aged all this time too!
Insta-WIN, Insta-buy pending review but I like what I'm hearing. Please do one of my all time favs justice and you've got a fan.
Yea remaking classics doesn't seem to work well. Galaga 90, space invaders extreme et al. The only ones i loved: Super Mario All Stars, love that on SNES, and Pacman CE was my first XBLA purchase, love it but was also happy to be able to get the arcade originals Pac n Ms Pac.
