New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe arrives on the Nintendo Switch later this week. You'll be able to read all about this enhanced Wii U game in our review which goes live later this week.
If you still haven't decided which version of the game (physical or digital) is the right one for your collection, Nintendo of America has issued a reminder you can receive double My Nintendo gold points when you pre-purchase a digital copy of the game from the eShop or Nintendo's official website. This will give a $6.00 eShop credit bonus. Here's the reminder below:
Here's the promotion courtesy of the UK Super Mario Twitter account:
The US promo will run until 10th January and Mario fans in the UK have until the 13th to claim double the amount of gold points. If you do opt with the digital version of the game, it's 2.5GB in size and around 100MB more than the original Wii U games New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U combined.
Will you be going digital with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe? Leave a comment below.

I'm good. I am gonna pick this up, but I still prefer physical.
It's still significantly cheaper to get a physical copy as launch day prices are pretty competitive whereas the eShop is full RRP. I'm not planning to buy the game at all unless I find it super cheap at some point though as I got bored of it really quickly on the Wii U. If you've played one New Super Mario Bros. game, you've played them all.
So you're setting out bait for me to start preferring digital over physical huh? True ownership of what I buy means more to me than double Gold Points.
...Eh, I got better games to play.
I keep debating on whether or not to do this. The double gold is enticing and Digital games are a bit cheaper for me as I don't have to worry about tax on em. But still always burns me to pay full price for a re-release of a game. But hey, I'll end up getting it eventually anyway so might as well get a small bonus with it I suppose.😅
I did buy a digital copy of this. For my Wii U
Re-releasing those titles makes total sense, they represent loads of investment and lotsa folks missed them, but some acknowledgment of the fans who already bought these would be welcome. Even if it's a silly in-game skin or something, doesn't even have to be a discount
To double dip or not to double dip? That is the question.
And I'm getting tired of asking myself that
To purchase or to purchase not. It’s the predicament of the ages. Yes, I know the grammar is incorrect, that’s the joke.
I only do physical. nintendo are influencing in an all digital era?
Just got my Switch for xmas: l should I get this or Odyssey? I’ll be playing mostly single player.
I'll wait till it Hits $35 and I'll think about it, like Tropical Freeze.
@humbucker I say Odyssey. It's a much more varied game. I went ahead and got this since I'm a big Mario fan, but since you don't have either yet, I definitely say Odyssey first. Both are great. Odyssey is just better though. Maybe wait for a price drop on this unless you're impatient like me.
@sleepinglion This I agree with. Some kind of shout out to those of us who did buy these games first on Wii U would be nice. Heck, they could make a few extra bucks sticking whatever it is as a cheap paid DLC(like, 1 dollar) for those completionists who didn't have the Wii U.
@Giygas_95 thank you, I really appreciate it!
Even though it's a USA offer and not applicable to me, I'll stick with physical. It's $20 cheaper than online.
People waiting for decent discounts on first-party Nintendo games, expect to wait along time. At best there's 20% off in six months, otherwise it's years before a 50% off. Such games are typically the only ones I buy on release day now.
@HalBailman Yeah back when I lived in the states I remember going to Game Stop and seeing Pokemon GBA games still selling for like 30 dollars well after the 3DS was out.
I prefer physical myself but for this rerelease I went digital as I had trade credit which covered my eshop card for the purchase as well as gold points/credit I had saved.
i like to buy single player games on switch physical so its a pass for me but nice offer though
I bought the game about 6 years ago, does that count?
I do love how Nintendo likes to charge us full price for what is effectively a glorified backwards compatibility. I get the whole newcomers thing but many did actually have a Wii U and despite Nintendo having a system which shows what games you have previously bought you aren't even offered so much as a discount for your loyalty. Where as over on Xbox they bring old games massively enhanced for the X and for free if you already had the disc and for newcomers it's a relatively small price compared to a new game.
Nintendo have done a lot right with Switch but they have handled this Wii U content horribly wrong
No, I will not pay $60 for a 100 year old game.
@Heavyarms55 Mario Kart 7 is still full RRP ($60) in Aus. You can shop around and get it at $5 less, or possibly $10 during a promotion from big chain stores or Amazon. Zelda Ocarina recently dropped to $30 under the "Nintendo Select" banner, as did Animal Crossing, which prompted me to buy both (Ocarina $25 at Amazon). I was waiting years for the drop! All the Pokemons (X/Y, Blue/Red, Sun/Moon and Ultras) are $60, except for odd spots like Amazon has Sun/Moon for $36 and Ultras $46. That's now Nintendo keeps the retailers happy: specific deals and very little competitive pressure from the e-shop. They need them to promote and sell the hardware and games. Since MK7 still sells so well, it might stay full price a bit longer.
Make sense since there are two games in there. Still why not apply it to the physical copy as well? Why make it a limited time thing?
I only do physical full stop, so it's an obvious one for me regardless of the extra incentive. Going to pick my copy up from GAME at some point on Friday (having £80 store credit and being a GAME Elite Member is more of an incentive to me). Will be good to play this through again
I'll be passing on this personally(probably double dip later). But 6 bucks back is really cool and for those who missed this on Wii U, it's a great 2-pack of platforming titles.
@Heavyarms55 That's an excellent idea, man. Just some nod. Appreciation for the diehards
As a Wii U owner: Please stop with the ports ;_;
@HalBailman : Fun fact, the original RRP for Mario Kart 7 was in fact AU$70. Starting from the release of Luigi's Mansion 2, Nintendo brought the RRP down for new AAA 3DS games going forward to $60 (as the Australian dollar was quite strong at the time). Likewise, the price for Nintendo-published Wii U games was $80 compared to $100 for Wii titles.
It took them long enough, but games such as Mario Kart 7, 3D Land, Fire Emblem Awakening etc. eventually had their prices dropped to $60 (and this is also reflected in the eShop). With the Australian dollar being as weak as it is now, it wouldn't surprise me to see Switch games creeping back up to the $90-$100 price range.
@HalBailman Oh well if you mean sealed new copies, that's different. I was talking about used copies.
No thanks. I'd rather they had an early-bird or Switch-online exclusive discount (like with PS Plus), personally.
Thought it was 5.1 gigs. Anyway I preordered from Nintendo uk store I liked the freebies. I did consider digital for convenience though.
@Kriven why would your gold coins expire? Use them on eshop it’s great
All these re-releases of WiiU titles is good for those who may have missed out initially. And at least it's 2 games, and not just one.
Pre-ordered my few days ago along with Tales of Vesperia. I still have the WiiU version with me.
Double dippers here I come (;
Fridays gonna be good for me with this and Bowser's Inside Story coming out on the same day.
@humbucker odyssey without question!
I buy digital for $60 games and digital for fun indie titles.
I prefer the digital in usage , lovely to have all your games just sitting there but I like to have true ownership.
Let me download my physical games onto my Switch please Nintendo!
Anyway, I’ll be buying this physical, been a while since I’ve played 2d Mario.
Not gonna get it, 60 is a bit steep for an old game that has so little new content etc. This game (including the Luigi DLC) is well worth the price cos it has plenty to offer. But as for me, I already own te game on wii u, including Luigi U. I wish Nintendo had some sort of program where people who already have an older relese could get a discount for double dipping.
Anyway, I rarely buy "new" games anyway because I have such a long backlog. I'll usually wait for the pricedrop or a sale and grab the games then. So I might get this one for 30 something euros if that ever happens.
I didn't play it on Wii U so I'm going to buy, the price is irrelevant to me, but I'm debating whether to do physical or digital. On the one hand, I like having something physical I can trade in someday. On the other hand, it's a hassle changing cartridges all the time...
Shame Amazon isn't offering their $10 credit on preorders for this title...guess I'll buy it digitally even if I've been buying Nintendo first party games on cartridge so far...
Or £37.99 at Smyths in the U.K. if you can pick up instore. Or £38.86 at Shopto.
I would buy it digital, but I already have this game on Wii U, and already have a lot of games for Switch, so I think I will buy it later eventually.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Yeah but then the people who never own a Wii U may miss out especially now since the Wii U is hard to find nowadays and is going for jacked up prices. It would be a great opportunity for Nintendo to get more Wii U ports to Switch ASAP.
@retro_player_22 Don't worry, I get that, it's catch 22, Wii U owners will be dismayed and those that had no Wii U would love to embrace the opportunity; just wished there is more...
Double dipping for sure! People like to bash on the new series but anyone's who played this gem can say its the best 2d mario game (my favorite will forever be smb3 tho) and I can finally play co-op! The wiiu version forced the player with the gamepad to play in boost mode and there was no way around that.
@Mati I really don't understand people like you who have really weird conspiracy theories about buying digital games.
@KIRO Thank you!
I think even Nintendo knows it’s a hard sell to put this game out for 60$. Sure there are plenty Switch owners that haven’t play but there are also plenty that have. I’d like to have it on my Switch but I’ve already paid 60$ for it once.
@humbucker as someone who has played through both Id get Oddessy now and save MARIO U for a sale. They are both very solid games but Oddessy was built for Switch.
@BoFiS Amazon stopped doing that altogether.
@th3r3ds0x much appreciated! I’ll definitely get Odyssey.
The double gold coins is tempting and it would be nice to have it on the Switch, but I have both NSMBU and NSLU on Wii U already. Who knows, the massive Mario fan in me would tell me to double dip for the 600 coins... or if it's past the release date I'll probably just wait for a sale.
@carlos82 agreed. I would rather pay $60 a year for online, but get access to or even a cheap deal on these ports.
Honestly they should have though Of their loyal customer fan base and provided some type of discount or bonus for those of us who already bought it on Wii U. I’m not double dipping for full price on this. Not for double gold points and certainly not for $60. However for those of you that never played it, good for you. The game is great espececially the Luigi levels.
@humbucker I will be buying this game since I haven't played since NSMB DS, but Odyssey is one of the best games on Switch and you should get it 100%, A one in a million experience
