Right off the back of The Game Awards 2024, Nintendo is in the running for yet another batch of prizes as The Super Mario Bros. Movie has landed itself not one, not two, but three nominations at this year's Golden Globes.
The Nintendo and Illumination production is up for Best Motion Picture - Animated, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (a new category for this year's ceremony), and, of course, 'Peaches' is in the running for Best Original Song - Motion Picture.
Since its release earlier this year, the Mario Movie has gone on to become one of 2023's highest-grossing films and the best-performing video game adaptation of all time. This doesn't mean that any of the categories it is nominated in will be a walk in the park, mind you, as Mario's return to the big screen finds itself up against behemoths like The Boy and the Heron, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Barbie.
The Golden Globes 2024 will be held on Sunday 7th January 2024 and will be kicking off at 8pm ET / 5pm PT. A full list of the 2024 nominees can be found on the Golden Globes website.
What chance do you think the Mario Movie has at the Golden Globes? Let us know in the comments.

Makes sense. There's only three good movies this year The Boy and the Heron, Suzume, Spider-man
and the globes needed to fill out the rest of the roster with something. The rest are just filler slots.
@WaffleRaptor01 Even so, I would've put TMNT above Mario.
Mario movie < Spider-Man movie
Mario game > Spider-Man game
It's either going to be Spider-man or The Heron for sure. There's no way Mario has a chance.
Keep thinking I missed the Boy and the Heron, but nope, it’s Uk release is Boxing Day.
I hope it is in cinemas for a while, I’d probably prefer to see it with friends, but we won’t be meeting up after Christmas until 2024.
The boy and the heron crushes all competition there, it's almost unfair tbh.
Still loved Mario though.
Lmao Mario slightly dwarfed by the competition. Hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby.
Let’s see… not seen the Boy and the Heron for the above reason, so can’t comment on it, not seen Elemental or Wish, but either didn’t hear much about them, or not much good about them. Across the Spider-verse was spectacular and had me on the edge of my seat. Door Anime was very good apart from the romance felt flat (should have stuck to the original plan maybe). Super Mario, well it was fun and one of the better Video Game movies, but not exactly groundbreaking.
I forget how the Golden Globes work? Are they judged or voted on? As I remember hearing about how the judges for one award were simply not watching the animated nominees and going for Disney entries just because.
Door Anime and probably The Boy and the Heron might go over judges/viewers heads? (Again, not seen tBatH yet?). Spider-Verse has a lot of setup to get on top of, and while other spider-verse stuff isn’t important to understanding it really, the first film is needed, and also unfamiliarity with Spider-man/comics might put judges/viewers off. Definitely best comic hero movie this year though.
Mario… requires a lot of setup to get the in jokes and Easter eggs, but is also bright and colourful for kids and puny judges’ minds.
So if Disney or Mario end up winning, I think most people won’t be able to take it seriously. Again, I don’t remember how Golden Globes work.
As long as voters don't go for the usual, lazy whatever-disney/pixar-released-this-year choice, I'm okay with any of those other movies winning the best animated feature prize.
I’m guessing I’m in the minority of people that hated the animation style of Spiderverse. I’d much rather watch Mario anyday.
Did someone say GLOBE...
The plot of the Mario movie is kinda generic the the visuals are a real treat and it deserves to be nominated for that aspect alone. I'd say it's a fairly stacked showing for the best animated feature category, all have a fair argument to be there, except Wish which should forever be locked away in the Disney vault. However my clear winner in that is The Boy and the Heron.
@Quiet2down different strokes I guess. I felt like a passerby watching Spiderverse because it refuses to sit still for more than a couple seconds. Its hyper Ritalin induced style was a barrier to me having any emotional connection with the characters.
@milliag So you pick Mario, the very definition of all you just said. Yeah, you just looking for an excuse to hate the film.
Gotta be between Suzuke and Spiderman for me.
Mario was decent fun and The Boy and the Heron was interesting. Didn't catch the others.
Might lean towards Spiderman if I had to pick one. What a movie.
Well deserved. Had a lot of fun with the Mario movie. The Spider-Man movie though, I gave up halfway through. The artstyle was annoying, and TOO hipster/flashy, and I'm just so damn tired of all the Marvel/Multiverse crap.
@milliag I'm going to remove my original response. At first I was trying to have a serious discussion, but I don't know if you are joking or serious so I won't take it as serious.
If you actually think Spider-verse didn't have moments to allow breathing, then I don't know what to tell you. Sorry I wasted my time responding. Have a good day.
It is a shame this film didn't beat the video game movie curse. I don't think I have ever watched a video game adaptation that I thought was ''great'' or ''amazing'' At best 'OK'
History is full with missed opportunities.
It's probably not winning Best Animated Picture, that's likely going to Spider-Verse. But if Peaches doesn't win for song, we riot.
@milliag At least it had plot and character development and actual good voice performances. Mario was a soulless cashgrab.
@Steel76 At least Spiderverse wasn't a souless cashgrab with terrible voice performances, bad plot and no character development.
@RBRTMNZ Yup, love Mario games; but the film was trash.
@Workcomesfirst agree to disagree. Both movies had their good points. You just prefer one to the other. I think the Mario movie appeals to an older generation/fan (like me) and Spiderverse screams millennial/Gen Z. But that’s just how I see it.
If Mario wins over The Boy and the Heron I'm done with this world.
@milliag All of what I said was accurate, but if you want to disagree go ahead. One screams talent, while the other doesn't.
@PinderSchloss The Boy and the Heron is better than any Illumination film to this date and I don't expect that to change.
@Workcomesfirst The worst Ghibli has ever done is still better than the best Illumination will ever dream of making
@PinderSchloss I'd rather have Goro work on a Zelda movie than Illumination. They are THAT bad. I will never get the hype.
@milliag You mean like you? Reducing a entire film to nothing but Ritalin junk? Meanwhile Mario is a like a child high off caffeine and sugar cubes.
You think wrong. Gen X which both grew up with Mario and Spider-man have praised Spiderverse for it's s portrayal of the Peter Parker they knew as a kid. So for you to say it's only for millennial crowd is inaccurate. Not only is it inaccurate but ridiculous. Do you know when millennials were born? Their history with Mario character is far bigger than Gen Z's.
Do you have an actual critique of the film other than it just wasn't for you? At this point you are coming off some who just doesn't like the film on a personal level.
If you don't that's fine. You can even prefer the Mario movie, but that fact you reduce the animation to nothing but attention disorder is messed up. There's alot of Irony in your post and you either you know this and just don't care, or just finding an excuse to bring down Spider-verse.
@Workcomesfirst
The Mario movie was more entertaining.
Hated the annoying Gen Z characters in the Spider-Man movie.
Deal with it.
@Steel76 Which has better reviews? Eat that.
A lot of people can’t handle a different opinion. I’m not a big movie buff or student of animation techniques. Just an average guy with personal likes and dislikes. The Mario movie made more money for a reason. It appeals to a wider audience. Not everything has to be a pseudo intellectual art house film for it to be considered good. The Mario movie was exactly what it needed to be. A fun movie that’s easy to look at that can be enjoyed by a wide audience.
There are so many things to think about here... maybe first and foremost the snubs. TMNT and at least one Netflix film (preferably Nimona) should've been there, maybe in place of one of the two Disney films (surprisingly Wish).
Best of luck for the SMB movie, but I honestly think both Boy and the Heron and Spider-Verse deserve to win here. It was incredibly popular with the fans and public, but not so much with official critics. We won at the end and owe for the film's success, but does it really deserve to win?
Well at least I hope it wins for best original song lol
@Workcomesfirst
Lol. Who cares what critics think these days.
@milliag "'Exactly what it needed to be'' is an excuse for it's lack of cohesive plot and character development. If you like bad films, continue to, but that doesn't mean it isn't bad. It sold well due to the brand, not plot. We are at an age where character development and good voice performances are "'Pseudo intellectual art house''
I don’t go to a Mario movie for character development. Has there ever been character development in the history of Mario? It’s a cartoon designed for kids and their nostalgic parents. The story is appropriate for the audience. Plots don’t have to be convoluted.
@Workcomesfirst I wouldn’t go that far at all. I think the Mario movie is really fun and charming. It’s exactly what I wanted and it made me cry from pure joy. For me it’s not that Mario is bad it’s that Spider-Man is the best movie I watched this year.
I caught Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume at the cinema and it was amazing. With Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron as well that’s some tough competition.
I did like the Mario Bros. film but I hope Suzume wins.
@RBRTMNZ I thought it was pretty bad and I watched it before the 2nd SpiderVerse.
There's a glaring lack of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem among the nominees. Also, The First Slam Dunk is arguably more deserving of nomination than Wish. Kick Super Mario Bros and Wish out of the nominees list for credibility. Hell, even that average Ukrainian animated movie (Mavka) was more deserving than Wish, Super Mario Bros or Elemental.
Elemental simply wasn't as good as Pixar's earlier movies, and the inclusion of that Up related short in Elemental cinema sessions only served as a reminder of this.
We all know that Wish was released at the end of the year for the express purpose of keeping it fresh in the minds of as many Academy members as possible.
Also, you know things are bad when a lifelong gamer like myself was hoping to God that Barbie would overtake the Super Mario Bros movie. That's how angry I was about wasting my birthday cinema freebie on the Super Mario Bros movie.
@milliag Sorry, but I have to disagree and think that's just an excuse. Film and games are different mediums.
Lego movie is about brick toys. Brick toys have no character development, yet a movie about bricks was a hit with the critics. There is no excuse for Mario other than it's a safe yet forgettable film that could have been more. It served it's job, but it's average.
People are handling a difference opinion just fine. You made a post on an open forum and invited others to disagree with you. Maybe next don't do that if you don't like the responses.
You like the Mario which is fine. Everyone is entitled to like what they like, but it seems you for some odd reason keep reducing the hard work that went Spider-verse as nothing.
My question is why? Mario proved itself at the box office despite critics not liking it. And Spider-Verse was a box office hit with both fans and critics.
Why not just say you liked Mario movie more? You aren't giving any serious real breakdown of why you disliked Spider-man other than hating the animation.
Why are you so intent putting the films achievement's down? You keep inviting criticism to your post the more you throw insults at the movie. Like why?
@Vexx234
I’m not a movie reviewer and I’m not entitled to write out a breakdown of why I didn’t like Spiderverse. I don’t like the animation style as I simply find it too busy, and I don’t care for the whole multiverse concept. I’m not putting the film’s achievements down, I just don’t care for it. And frankly, I’m not doing anything anyone else doesn’t do when they defend their tastes. People crap all over the Mario movie all the time whenever Spiderverse is brought up and if you’re truly objective about art, then you should recognize there are no absolutes.
@Workcomesfirst Yeah I gathered from all your comments here yelling at people about a movie we like. It seems like you made this account just to yell about these movies. That’s some real loser behavior weirdo.
@RBRTMNZ Not really. If you want to like the movie, go ahead.
But that doesn't mean you should brush away any criticism. This happens a lot with video game adaptation films because people are defensive with the franchise they grew up with. I get that, which is why I personally was not only NOT a fan but also disappointed.
@milliag Here is thing. You didn't just stop at saying you disliked the film. You compared it to ritilin and somehow something only millennials care about as if its a negative thing. When truth is people from all generations loved the film, it's animation and style.
You are finding ways to bring down the film with comments such as that or atleast the people who enjoyed it. No is claiming you are entitled to defend you position. It's just Im curious why all the small unneeded jabs.
All that aside, only a small minority craps over Mario. If you actually break down the RT scores, you will find alot of critics thought is was okay film at best. Really the reception of the Mario film is not as bad as a small minority makes it out to be.
On a worldwide scale you will find more people who gave the movie a thumbs up than a thumbs down. Im not even crapping on the film. Just saying it could have been more than what is was. It did is job which is fine.
Lastly, Im not objective about art. While I find Mario to be meh overall, it's far from the worse thing to ever grace theaters. Not even close. Wish exists and is everything wrong with Disney.
I grew up watching a small animated show on Disney that showed me animation can be alot more than I gave it credit for. So when I see films related to the genre, I enjoy when the story attempts some level of depth.
That's not say I can't enjoy mindless fun, just not as much. Spider-verse nails it when it comes to it's characters and story. Mario however sacrifices all that to be eye candy. Which is fine, but a bit letdown.
If the reverse were true, I'd pick Mario over Spider-man any day. Not every film deeps to be as deep as an ocean, but some depth is always a good thing in my book.
This isn't a Mario problem, it's an illumination problem and their approach to animation and storytelling. Had any other company in the world, and no I don't mean Disney, being given a chance; I'm sure the film would nailed it in that department.
I don't have small kids, but if I did, Im sure they'd enjoy Mario far more than Spider-man. So from my childless pov, it's meh. But from a person who has small kids pov, it's good family flick to pass time. And worth a buy, or stream.
Anyways that's my long response.
The fact that they nominated Wish means I have zero trust in the judges lol
But realistically, Spider-Man or the Boy and the Heron are the only possible choices
@milliag It's a movie with characters. It needs one for that alone.
Otherwise it'll get criticized. The Sonic movies despite its faults had character development. Films need it to strive.
@Vexx234 my apologies if my comments appeared to put down different age groups or ADHD or what have you. I could use different language to express my opinions sometimes. I recognize that there are flaws in the Mario movie, but perhaps due to my longtime fandom and wanting a show or movie to do Mario some justice since the first time I played Super Mario Bros in ‘87, when I watched the film I had an emotional response. I actually teared up watching it which may seem silly, but I think the fan service and love for the franchise as well as the visuals (which I found beautiful) and humor combined to make it a special experience for me. I wish I felt that way with Spiderverse, as I am a fan of the live action Spiderman films. Have a good night.
@Workcomesfirst I would argue their portrayal of Princess Peach at least showed development and thought.
@milliag Not really. She was basically perfect and not girly enough.
@Workcomesfirst which is arguably an improvement on the blank slate you get in the games
@milliag Damsel in distress turned into a perfect character with no arc nor character development? Is that really the best Illumination has to offer? Kind of lazy and equally pathetic if you ask me.
@Workcomesfirst Her back story is right there in the movie. You can choose to ignore it if you want.
@milliag I didn't say she didn't have a backstory (she barely did), I said she didn't have character development throughout the film.
I'm a big Mario fan and I still felt the Mario movie was fine. I haven't seen The Boy and the Heron, but I can say that Spider-Man is above the Mario Movie for me in terms of animated films. Spider-Man just did a lot more to entertain me and keep me on the edge of my seat and impressed me more than the Mario movie with fine visuals and just lots of little easter eggs and references.
