Early this year Nintendo surprised and delighted us by bringing Wii games to the Wii U eShop; though they're the same basic Wii titles and they're booted in the system's Wii Mode, it nevertheless allows us to download some retail games we may have missed in the last-gen. It kicked off with Super Mario Galaxy 2, as well, which was a fantastic start.
The fact it was the sequel made some hope that the first has been getting the 'HD treatment', but that's evidently not the case. During today's Japanese Nintendo Direct it was announced that Super Mario Galaxy is now available for download in Japan, also with an initial discounted promotion price.
We expect this'll make its way to the West relatively soon - will you be picking up the download for your Wii U?

I'd much rather Mario Sunshine HD honestly, if not a Wii U sequel to Sunshine or Galaxy. I'm not picky lol
Part of me is hoping for a return of the Hanabi Festival, so maybe I'll get the chance to play Excite Bots and Kirby's Dream Collection without importing/modding, and the just-announced Zangeki no Reginleiv without importing/modding/not having a clue what is going on.
I swear there selling this still.
Not getting it - still have my Wii disc version and it works perfectly
Why remaster a Wii game you can easily find in stores and is compatible with the Wii U? Bring those GC remasters on the Wii U.
I agree in was too soon compared to some games, but who doesn't want an excuse to play Mario galaxy all over again!!
It's a generation old. It had to be a long stretch for some to think it would get a remaster. Sunshine however is a pretty likely candidate. I could be wrong, but I anticipate an E3 reveal.
@NintyMan
This.
The idea of Mario Galaxy HD always felt like a waste of time to me (the original is perfectly playable on Wii U and can still be easily located in stores) and Nintendo'd be better off going ahead with a third game. At least Mario Sunshine HD, though I won't have it either way, would make more sense.
Ha ha ha ha ha remastered???? give me an break. If you brought "Zelda:Wind Waker" download then why not this???? Seriously give me an break.
I never understood how people got it into their heads SMG would get the HD treatment just because SMG2 was put on the eshop first.
I really hope with the NX Nintendo manages to integrate all its older systems properly into a single interface this time around; so you can play whatever games from older systems without having to go into something like a separate Wii mode for example.
You'd just have a whole bunch of game icons on the one screen, maybe with folders for nice and neat organisation, and you'd select the game and it would boot up directly from there. No convoluted crap of having to go into Wii mode and then load up clunky versions of software running as they would if you were using a Wii, with all the limitations and shortcomings of that system and its interface.
It's the little silly things like this that really bug me about Wii U.
I'm glad this was confirmed which debunks HD remaster theories. Honestly the only game of last gen that deserves a HD remaster is Radiant Dawn but only because you can't transfer your Path of Radiance data to Radiant Dawn when using a Wii U (no way of reading GC memory card).
Cool, this is easier than having to go into the Wii menu. I've still got my Wii disk though, so I have no need to buy this.
@EllenJMiller I don't think they'll rerelease the Kirby Collection digitally not when you can buy all the games on it separately (Or at least eventually, once Kirby 64 is added) on Wii U and 3DS.
Now if it were Capcom and we had GC games, they'd easily put MegaMan Aniversary Collection on VC just for the excuse of letting us have MM8.... XD
@outburst I agree with this! The only benefactor would be if you could play on the gamepad (like with Pandora's Tower)
@Kirk I completely agree with you captain!! And I don't particularly fancy paying any upgrade fees either. I just want the console to recognize my NNID and direct me in the way of the eshop. Even better, a system transfer at launch that lets me play everything from my HDD
@G0dlike Yeah, all that stuff would be cool.
Nintendo just needs to keep it all simple and elegant, transparent and intuitive, satisfying and fair. It's not actually a big ask, so hopefully it's gets it all sorted for the NX at least, but Ideally I still like Nintendo to get around to sorting this for the current Wii U and 3DS too, via a firmware update or whatever.
I'm all for/about genuinely 'satisfying the customer'—while turning that profit.
My opinion is they should release some game cube games other than metro I'd er eternal darkness f zero gx giest a few ideas.
Punch-Out, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime released on eShop. Each franchise is rumoured to have another sequel. Maybe nintendo is preparing us for E3 announcments?
I will not be supporting the WiiU N64 eshop titles until they fix the emulator to render games in HD before outputting, same goes for DS titles, it's just silly because the games could look WAY better with a simple emulator setting...
Wii games in HD is not a selling point, people had been playing them in HD for the last few years with Dolphin. Nintendo probably knew that, so didn't want to waste time and money remastering them.
@bofis Not criticism just curiosity - do you mind elaborating what you mean by "render games in HD before outputting" in regards to emulated games?
@KirbyKirbyKirby Yes, yes they are. I see it at GameStop everytime I go there. It is an amazing game though so I guess the more people that can get it, the better.
I haven't played this one yet,but will get this when it comes to eshop.
@Sir_JBizzle well, there is The Last of Us Remastered, and that was from last generation, on a game that was less than a year old [and only a little more than a year old when released].
@Charlosa on modern computers you can emulate N64-Wii games and set the native resolution of the game engine to be 1080p so basically the game is being rendered at that resolution in the video card, rather than the original 480p being upscalled after the fact by the WiiU and blown up for your TV.
Here is a 1080p screenshot of Mario Galaxy for example:

Galaxy 3 incoming?
If it's offered at $10 dollars at first it's a good deal for people who don't have it, $20 is high since you can get physical disks for less than that.
@Steel76 Technically it's a rerelease, not a remaster.
I have to say as much as I love new games, I still want some rereleases and some remasters. Prior to the rerelease of Galaxy 2 I had wished to play that game again for a long time. Also bought Mario 64 and Kirbi Wii from the eshop.
But the first Mario Galaxy... hm no, I don't need it, the second one was better.
@bofis That is beautiful... :')
@90sRetroGaming Even 3D DS games would greatly benefit from in-emulator increase in resolution without even redoing the games in the least, look at Mario Kart, on the left is how it looks on WiiU, rendered at DS resolution and blown up, vs. on the right where it's rendered higher internally first:

Already have this and the sequel on discs. As much as I love all them 3D Marios, Super Mario Galaxy 1 is my least favorite of them all (but a decent game).
I wish Nintendo would allow the Galaxy games to be played on the GamePad without needing a Wii Remote. It seems to me that the shake gesture in Galaxy could be mapped to a button and the pointer could be mapped to the touch screen. That way the game could be comfortably played off-screen...
Id get this right away.
Are they ever going to release more for the Wii U in America? I feel like they came out with three then just swept it under the rug. There isn't even a Wii game section in the eShop.
goodbye, super mario galaxy hd dreams!
I have the first on disc, so no. I wouldn't say no to Super Mario All Stars, though that will probably never happen as a Wii U download when the Super Mario Advance series on Virtual Console basically covers it.
Meh, personally I'd rather that they'd found a way to simply upscale the wii games since the games already looked decent enough for the most part anyway, other than them being at a lower resolution.
On the other hand i'd much rather a game like the original Paper Mario receive a visual update (perhaps released with a higher res Thousand Year Door). and with a few tweaks from TTYD (e.g. the additional b-button defensive mechanic for instance). The game still looks decent, but it's amazing just how nice TTYD looks in comparison though.
I dont know about making it to the west. Im still waiting for DKC returns. Europe got it. I guess we are too far west.
