Super Mario Starshine, the fan-made project that brings together the world of Super Mario Sunshine and the gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy, now has a playable demo!
As reported by TheGamer, the project is the work of Mario fan @SPG642, who has stripped away Mario's trusty F.L.U.D.D. and thrown the world of Sunshine and Delfino Plaza into a Mario Galaxy-style game. Specifically, the project uses Super Mario Galaxy 2's engine as a base, and it looks stellar.
SPG642 shared a trailer for the mod over the weekend to celebrate the demo's release, and it shows off snippets from the beginning of the game, Bianco Hills, and you can even play as Luigi in this one like in Galaxy!
Mario's power-ups from Galaxy will be available, such as the Bee Mushroom and the Cloud Flower, and Yoshi will also be returning (who was playable in both Galaxy 2 and Sunshine).
The lack of F.L.U.D.D.for the whole game and not just Sunshine's special stages means platforming will require a bit more thought, and the 100 purple coins and Cosmic Clones are making another appearance. Basically, there's a mix of some of the best parts of Galaxy 2 and Sunshine, so it's a dream come true for us. And, if you have a Wii and want to play the demo on official hardware, you can!
Head on over to SPG642's Twitter to find out more about the project. Otherwise, share your thoughts on Super Mario Starshine with us in the comments!

Way to ruin any chance of this project taking off by making it widely known and increasing the chances of it getting taken down
@Funneefox why don't you say that to newer super mario bros wii, which has been around since, uh, 2013 with no difficulties
If there's no copyrighted code or assets, there is zero Nintendo can do about it.
Also pretty sure the current cookies popup is in violation of the UK law by having everything set by default to accepted with no notice. Cookies have to be opt-in.
Reminds me how much I want Mario galaxy 2 on the switch….
@AG_Awesome It's really annoying that it is the only one missing at this point. It's also the best 3D Mario platformer in my opinion.
@Jey887 Same. My fav 3d Mario of them all. I want an nice switch remaster so badly. Maybe someday.
@wonderclassic. Would assume the usage of “Super Mario” in the game title is the initial hurdle. From the screen shot on the page the main character looks very similar to one created by Nintendo.

So it's Sunshine without the core mechanic that made Sunshine amazing, rebuilt in Galaxy's engine without making use of the core mechanic that made Galaxy amazing?
Honestly sounds like the worst of both worlds to me, tbh.
@Funneefox The Mario 64 PC port is still alive and well. Another M2 Remake is also still very easy to obtain via google searches. I think things will be ok
As is the Ocarina of Time port.
@wonderclassic
"If there's no copyrighted code or assets, there is zero Nintendo can do about it."
This is 100% incorrect.
Have a nice day.
@Fath Yeah, if there were new levels that would be one thing, but any excitement I had vanished as soon as I saw Mario long-jumping down the water slide in Bianca Hills.
Also, not trying to be mean, but that music is awful.
@BloodNinja AM2R is fine, yes, but with community support, not DocM64. Having the support and control of the original dev vs an entire community are two totally different things, for better or worse.
AM2R might not even be a thing at all if Nintendo shut it down before it got released, there's a reason the community took over that specific C&D, because it was very good, not just because it was C&D'd.
@NlifeRSnowflakes ???
Weird to see they didn't remake the fludd pack but instead you use power ups, that seems kinda cool. I don't know if the fludd really would've felt right in mario galaxy's physics anyway.
I already played the whole demo, and it's a freaking blast. Highly recommend playing this.
@wonderclassic Mario himself is copywrited so that will be enough.
I don’t understand why people with this much talent don’t just create something of their own rather than go though the waste of time of infringing an established IP and getting their hard work forced to stop.
I see my previous comments got removed. The original NintendoLife article breaks its own community rules. 4b “Do not link to illegal content” 4c “We ask that you do not link to any resources for illegal copyrighted content such as where to download roms”. Happy to hear the argument from NintendoLife that this is legal content which is being linked to.
