Who were the Arcade🕹👑Kings?

Sega had great games, such as Outrun, Super Hang-on, VR Racing, VR Boxing, Ghost Squad and my favourite of the lot, Daytona USA.

However, Capcom had brilliant games, like Street Fighter 2, it's Alpha SF games, Final Fight, Cadillacs And Dinosaurs, it's version of Alien Vs Predator, Captain Commando and many others.

But if you had one Arcade token, who's slot are you putting it in?

This is a tough one, both are responsible for many of my favorite arcade games, and their arcade ports made Capcom the best 3rd party supporter of the Dreamcast. I'll give the edge to Sega though for greenlighting some really out-there ideas like Jambo Safari, Crazy Taxi, and Monkey Ball.

SEGA, no question.

I have to go with Capcom just for Street Fighter alone.

Interesting question. The correct answer is SNK. Okay, seriously, it's an interesting question and both companies made excellent games. Sega was one of the big players, like Namco. They made a lot of arcade experiences, especially with their scaler boards. The deluxe units were basically rides. Capcom played in a different league, in a sense. They focused on standard arcade boards and relied purely on game design. And argument could be made for either company to be superior for arcades. But as the question is posed, I would probably go with Capcom because a lot of the Sega stuff was more than just a quarter or single token. A lot of their stuff was considered premium, so I gravitated toward the regular games most of the time.

They’re both kinda equal. They have one franchise I really care about ( Sonic and Monster Hunter), and then just a bunch of meh stuff. I’m sure I’m forgetting some thought.

I know this was originally about arcades, but I was born to late for that type of thing unfortunately.

I run a weekly retro video game poll on Reddit. From the Atari Era through the NES era, and entering the SNES Era, both Sega and Capcom so far have 14 entries making the lists.

If you're talking just arcade games, then Sega so far has 7 and Capcom has 4. Though it gets murky for example because some console ports are considered superior to the arcade originals.

On the console side of things, Capcom gets a big boost from all the many beloved Mega Man entries, with 6 so far making the lists.

I think both are good in their own ways.

I shoulda justified my SEGA vote a bit more...

I didn't use arcades much - lack of spare cash as a kid and lack of opportunity growing up in a rural village. The arcade games that I remember playing are:

Pac-Man (couldn't tell you which one)
Rampage
OutRun
After Burner
Gauntlet
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Street Fighter II (couldn't tell you which one)
Daytona USA

Other than that, apart from the occasional soccer game (likely Taito, I'm guessing), nothing else stands out, and so as four of the above are SEGA and only one is Capcom, it's no contest for me. I wouldn't even rank Capcom second.

In terms of what kind of games I'm into, I'll pick Sega. I like their racing games, especially. However, in terms of arcade games, I think I like Namco the best overall, with Pac-Man and Galaga being a couple of my favorites. Most of the stuff I've played from Sega and Capcom were on consoles, and even then, I've gotten more into Sega's stuff. The only Capcom franchise I really got into was Mega Man.

Afterburner was very impressing. And I remember once in a trip in London, to have played a sort of Afterburner on a device that was rotating at 360°
