Game Profile

It’s time for some good old family fun, and what’s more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn’t matter if you’re an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park.

Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren’t enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready.

Will table tennis fans rally behind this challenger to Wii Sports?

Family Table Tennis is the first WiiWare game to directly compete with Wii Sports and Wii Play -- two games that almost every Wii owner already has. So, is it a waste of your hard earned Wii Points, or a fun, new experience that can be enjoyed alongside..

With all of the different ping pong options I now have on my wii the only thing left is to go out and get a stupid ping pong table. Until they combine some ping pong with the Wii Fitness Board and add online play, with no friend code nonsense either, I will not purchase another one.

I think the chances of it coming out of Japan are fairly high. It has full English menus as shown here (so all a publisher needs to do is well...publish it):

@ Starwold_UK

Plus let's not forget that (at least in America) Aksys always gets Arc System games over in the states (which I'm really becoming a fan of). Nice crew, though I'm not sure if I'm all too excited for this game.

Well its look better than most of the games on WiiWare i guess, still people are putting in crappy games these days.

So I was right? Aksys is bringing it to America under Family Ping Pong! Cool...but I wish I could see some vids...

KnucklesSonic8

8. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 15 May 2008, 15:21 BST

Seems not too bad. I'm not getting it though. I mean, we have Mario Party 8, MSOG, Wii Play, and toher games that have used Ping Pong/Table Tennis already. How much more do we need? Of them all, MSOG was the best, imho.

But after seeing the menu screens, it's nice to see the game has a bit more variety with mini-games also. I'll keep an eye on this...

Play SimPong ... or just get a f***ing real ping pong table and spent some serious pasttime with the family! Oh good grief, where does this end????

KnucklesSonic8

14. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 15:31 BST

Let's see. Pay more than $20 for a Ping Pong table or pay $5 for a virtual ping pong table, with much more variety. Hm.... tough choice. /sarcasm

edit:
Whoever gets this, please tell me how many blocks it is.

Terranigma

15. Terranigma United Kingdom 26 May 2008, 15:41 BST

I Have Wii Play, so i might not get this but for 500 points, i'm willing to give it a try when Europe gets it. I'm also getting a proper Table Tennis set for my birthday so another reason to not get it.

KnucklesSonic8

16. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 16:37 BST

500 Points is hardly anything to ask, really. But if you want some simple variety (there's more depth than Wii Play and MSOG's Table Tennis games), it may be worth 500. You can't go wrong, really... Or maybe you can. Time will tell... in 20 minutes. xD

Chris Davis

17. Chris Davis United Kingdom 26 May 2008, 16:44 BST

"Play SimPong ... or just get a f***ing real ping pong table and spent some serious pasttime with the family! Oh good grief, where does this end????"

Woa calm down, Wii was designed for stuff like this and for only around £3.25 it cant be that bad...

Objection_Blaster

22. Objection_Blaster United States 26 May 2008, 17:49 BST

@Knuckles 500 pts ($5) for this game or $10 for Wii play (minus controller value)
That's why people aren't seeing the big difference. And what with how your "sib" gets you to buy everything I wonder how you have ANY space/money left. ;)

Quimby

23. Quimby Australia 26 May 2008, 17:51 BST

I think there is a good chance of me getting this, depending on the review.
I really liked the wii play ping pong, but nobody else seems to be able to play it properly (or boxing strangely enough. I LOVE wii sports boxing) and the single player is dog poor (same with the billiards - awesome 2 player, terrible single player)

Dazza

24. Dazza United Kingdom 26 May 2008, 17:57 BST

Block size in the Wii Shop is a hefty 274 blocks (only a little lower than FF:CC) - ouch!

Kenji510

25. Kenji510 United States 26 May 2008, 18:41 BST

Looks pretty cool and fun... imma go and try it out and play this game.

KnucklesSonic8

26. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 26 May 2008, 18:57 BST

274 BLOCKS?! Are you serious? :o Wow... Even Pop is less.

@ Obj_Blaster: My sib has that affect on me I guess. It's just my way of showing thanks to her and being fair and stuff. I once won a giveaway because of her and she wanted OoT but I declined her request. FFCCMLK was my way of repaying back to her but I haven't told her that. ;) But anyway, I think I'd like Family Table Tennis. But I'd only play with my sib and my best friend.. oh and my cousins. I dunno.. we'll see how it goes when I get home. :)

Oh, and there IS a big difference. Wii Play is just boring rallying. This actually has more depth to it.

And as far as space goes, I've gotten quite a few N64 games and all of them save for Kirby 64 are all on SD Card now. :( As far as money goes, I didn't pay for the points I currently have. But I didn't hack anything so don't get the wrong idea. xD

@Dazza: When do you think the review will be up? And just because the Shop says it's 274 doesn't meant much to its own credit. The Shop has a tendancy of guess-timating the approximate size it'll take up. Most of the time, it over-compensates. For the ACTUAL file size for your console (which is what I want to know), could you please go and check your Channels Data to ensure that the two are different.

@Kenji: Wii Message me and tell me your impressions on it, bud. :)

ballkirby1

27. ballkirby1 United States 26 May 2008, 19:03 BST

Only $5 is a disguise so that you don't know how many blocks it takes up.

Kevin

28. Kevin United States 26 May 2008, 23:31 BST

274 blocks for a ping pong game? Oh my God!

Corbie

29. Corbie United States 27 May 2008, 02:50 BST

Considering the visuals in this game, it's no shock that it takes up this many blocks. Some very nice cel-shading in this one and quite a few different areas to play in. This shows a lot of polish for a WiiWare title. I like the game play, but at times it feels like you don't have a lot to do with the various swings. It's more timing than anything. Nice tunes as well.

Spencer is working on the review. Should be up soon.

Jona

Does this support the Wiimote (motion sensing)?
yes!
i got this game the moment it came on the wiiware. it is awesome and much better than wii play's ping pong which is boring rallying, and i consider it better than MSOG's ping pong cause it has mini-games. i cant explain it but its good try it out and if u dont like its well at least its only 500 wii points.

Corbie

31. Corbie United States 27 May 2008, 03:17 BST

The mini-games are fun too. I'm finally settling into the timing aspect of the swings and it does play a LOT better than Wii Play. The 500 Wii Point price was a nice touch as well. I just finished reviewing the game for my game blog and I have to say, I was more impressed with this title than I expected to be.

Gabbo

32. Gabbo United States 27 May 2008, 04:45 BST

Corbie

Terranigma

36. Terranigma United Kingdom 04 Jun 2008, 17:02 BST

I Saw the Review on IGN. They Mauled this game giving it 2.5 and here's the real kicker, they said This was "a project that had almost nothing on Pong. In fact, we'd wager that the simple gameplay mechanics powering Atari's classic remain far superior to those in the WiiWare title".

mr.niceguy

37. mr.niceguy United States 20 Jun 2008, 06:57 BST

I have to say, while I like ping-pong, I didn't like the tennis in Wii Sports, which this reminds me of(ping-pong is miniature tennis, after all), and the anime art style that's too cutesy to stomach is really keeping me away from this game. NO!

Jona

Can't go wrong with this one

It does seem strange that Europe haven't got this one yet, since it would have been a nice little plaything for when I'm bored.

KnucklesSonic8

46. KnucklesSonic8 Canada 13 Mar 2009, 02:28 GMT

Well now you got it and no, FTT isn't that great and not worth it especially not at 800 Points. It's already very difficult to recommend at 500 Points, much less 800.

But I'm happy that some DO enjoy this game.
